OB Woman’s Club Celebrates New Foundation

By time the cake was cut, this reporter counted a hundred people in the main room of the OB Woman’s Club, celebrating their “new foundation” – the new floors and restrooms.

Club President Alison Lyons welcomed members and guests and thanked those who had helped make it all happen. It was quite a shindig at the clubhouse Thursday night, Oct. 5th, with great fingerfoods and drink served by Epic Catering Company. THC owner Steven Yeng was there with spouse Brittany and their little boy. Yeng has been a big donor to the Club and helped them reach their goals to cover the costs of the new floors. Gary Gilmore – the famous jeweler was there – along with Beth, a past president of the Club. Why – even Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was there.

Coffee Bean at Voltaire and Catalina closed.

Friends in the neighborhood have reported that Coffee Bean in the new building at Voltaire and Catalina has closed.

Willie Is Back!

Willie is back at his shack! A friend spoke with him the other day and reports he is very happy to be back! Friends should stop by and welcome him back!

No Target in OB Planning Community Forum for Oct. 11th – Action Committee Meeting Friday, Oct 6th

The No Target in OB group is planning a Community Forum on Target Oct. 11th 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center.  A meeting to organize the event is on Friday, Oct. 6ths  at 7:00 p.m. at the Green Center, 4843 B Voltaire.

Woman Injured in Fall at Sunset Cliffs

San Diego lifeguards and firefighters rescued a young woman who fell off a cliff while hiking with her boyfriend at the Point Loma tidepools Tuesday, Oct. 4th. Video of the rescue shows a crane pulling the 23-year-old woman from the cliff. Lifeguards said the boyfriend jumped about 10 feet off a rock onto a stretch of sand. His girlfriend also jumped but injured her back. The woman was taken to the hospital. 10News

OB Man Wants City to Help Clean-up Homeless Trash

An Ocean Beach man wants help to permanently get rid of trash plaguing the coastline. Jeff Jaszcak and three other community members cleaned two homeless camps at the bottom of Orchard Avenue and Del Mar Avenue less than two weeks ago; now, another camp has popped up at the bottom of Del Mar Avenue that is almost as worse as before. 10News

Good Rant Against Short-Term Rentals

Joe Flynn wrote up a good rant against short-term vacation rentals at Voice of San Diego: “Short-term rentals of residential properties cause conflicts and problems. Allowing short-term rentals – a commercial use – in single-family residential neighborhoods undermines the purpose and intent of single-family zoning, causes economic offsets and creates administration and enforcement problems for the city. The latest proposal to allow short-term rentals in San Diego by Councilman Chris Ward and others is fatally flawed and should be rejected. …”

San Diego County rents hit record high

Average rent in San Diego County hit a record high of $1,875 last month, continuing more than six years of rising rents in a tight housing market. Rent has increased 7.59 percent in a year, said MarketPointe Realty Advisors, which has tracked the San Diego market since 1988. While that is down from an 8.4 percent increase at the same time last year, the latest jump still outpaced home price increases and expected income growth. …   The San Diego central market — made up of downtown, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, North Park — had the most places to live with 193 apartments. Average rent there was $2,033 a month with a 2.96 percent vacancy rate. San Diego Union-Tribune

Point Loma Picked as One of “Hottest” Neighborhoods in the Country

Lonely Planet asked its network of travel experts and locals to share their favorite neighborhoods within famous American cities. And Point Loma was picked as one of them. Here’s what reviewer Jade Bremner had to say:

“Point Loma is the conservative neighbor of hippy Ocean Beach, with its sports fishing centers, yacht clubs, and naval base…[it’s] home to a mishmash of New England-style clapboard houses, tropical- themed hotels, and exquisite modern hilltop homes with panoramic views of the city and harbor below. It’s common to see members of the armed forces in uniform around the sleepy town, but foodies also gravitate to Point Loma for the outstanding seafood brought to shore daily by boats, and served in local restaurants.” Insider

Home Brew Mart Founded by Point Loman Celebrates 25 Years

Home Brew Mart played a part in the evolution of San Diego as a center of serious beer artisans. Founded in 1992 by Point Loma native Jack White, Home Brew Mart was not only the incubator that later spawned Ballast Point, it was also a kind of “brewing university” where young brewer-employees … learned, experimented, and exchanged ideas with fellow brewers throughout San Diego. Countless other brewers …bought their very first home brew kits at Home Brew Mart. Chris White, fresh out of a Ph.D program at UCSD, first starting making yeast professionally as a way to supply Home Brew Mart. In 1995, he started White Labs expressly for that purpose. Today, White Labs not only supplies the vast majority of San Diego brewers with yeast, it’s also one of the largest producers and yeast suppliers in the world. San Diego Magazine

“Muses of the Old Globe” Includes Dress by Actress Marion Ross, Graduate of Point Loma High

An exciting new exhibit at the Women’s Museum of California,“Muses of the Old Globe” includes a standout among the muses on display. Actress Marion Ross wore a dress on display in “The Last Romance” (2010). She graduated from Point Loma High School in San Diego and enrolled in San Diego State University, where she was named the school’s most outstanding actress. After graduation in 1950, she performed in summer theater in La Jolla, California. The director was impressed by her talent and recommended that she try for work in films. Actress Marion Ross is a Globe treasure, performing in many Old Globe stage productions. Ross graduated from Point Loma High School and went on to graduate from San Diego State College before becoming a contract player at Paramount Studio, where she did lots of TV work. She is best known for the sitcom series “Happy Days,” receiving five Emmy nominations. She was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001.

OB Electric Bike One of 1000s Stolen Across San Diego, Police Say

An Ocean Beach couple is warning owners of electric bicycles after someone stole theirs in broad daylight. Emily Vastola says someone stole her grey Green World folding e-bike on Wednesday. The bike was locked at her apartment on Abbot Street and Long Branch Avenue. “My boyfriend jumped in his car and drove off,” Vastola said. “He was going up and down the alleys because we figured if someone was going to take it they’re going to hide it. But there was the lock on the wheel so we just figured they dumped it in a truck and drove off.” The couple spent $1200 on the new bike just a few days ago, and are still making payments on the e-bike. Unfortunately, they did not have insurance. Vastola says their e-bike had a light on it, a rack in the back, and a control screen on the handlebars. The serial number is 14020177. We checked with police and they said so far this year there have been more than 1,000 bikes stolen in the City of San Diego. That included regular bikes and electric bikes. In each of these cases, the thieves had to cut chains and locks to steal them. abc10News
