OB’s own Melanie Williams went through both Mexico earthquakes that just occurred. Melanie, a former member of the OB Town Council board and an energetic mover-and-shaker in the local yoga world, had just recently moved to Mexico in June to set up a yoga center.
She was interviewed by San Diego Fox5. She told them about her experiences during the 8.1 quake off the southern Mexican coast where she was living in a fishing village about 30 miles from the epicenter when it struck 12 days ago. It woke her up:
“It sounded like a train crashing or something. The ground was moving and I tried to get out of bed but it was shaking so fast I actually couldn’t.”
“I was thinking at first, this is going to stop. I wasn’t that scared and it just kept escalating and getting worse and building.”
Once out of bed, she braced herself in a doorway as the tremblor continued.
“I could feel stuff was breaking. Eventually, I started realizing OK, this is a big one and I could actually hear the walls in the concrete house starting to crack. At that point, I was like OK, I’ve had a really good life.”
Melanie ran outside once it stopped and was in the streets along with everyone else in the village. A concern arose about the possibility of a tsunami.
“So they asked me if I would take a couple of them down to the beach to check and see if the ocean looked like a tsunami was coming.”
Fortunately, none materialized. Over the next days, she said the aftershocks unnerved her.
But just last Tuesday night, a second earthquake struck Mexico, a 7.1 about 75 miles southeast of Mexico City. Melanie said:
“We all had kind of PTSD around here, because the first one was very traumatic and then to feel a second one, everyone just sort of bolted for the streets. It was very eerie and very silent.”
She everyone’s on edge, trying to do their best with hearts and prayers going out to those over two hundred people who lost their lives.
“Sending a lot of good energy thoughts and prayers for the people in Mexico City and the rescue efforts that are still ongoing there.”
