Doug’s Monster Calendar for Progressive Activists in San Diego, Sept. 9th – 18th

in San Diego

Editor: While our eyes are on Irma, Jose and Katia, we once again present “Doug’s Monster Calendar for Progressive Activists in San Diego” – and Ocean Beach and the rest of the Peninsula, of course – in an abbreviated form (we deleted events that had already occurred by time this was posted), compiled exhaustively by Doug Porter at our online partner, San Diego Free Press.

The Trump administration continues its assault on decency: immigrants are targeted, college rapists are protected, and a corporate crime wave of unheard of magnitude is sweeping the nation. Locally, the politics of disgust have fomented a Hepatitis A epidemic, in large part because making it hard to find a place to take a shit is part of the city’s program for the homeless.

So the struggle continues. Resist. Persist. Keep a song in your heart. And a smile on your face.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.

Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.

Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement.

Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

chieve zero waste by 2020. The goal of zero waste is also included in San Diego’s strong Climate Action Plan. Racing to Zero tracks San Francisco’s waste stream diversion tactics and presents innovative new solutions to waste. This film documents a surprising, engaging, and inspiring race to zero, which San Diego could emulate is it implements its Climate Action Plan.

Bystander & Ally Intervention Training

Saturday, September 9, 11am
St. Mark’s United Methodist Church
3502 Clairmont Drive
For More Information

Please join us for our first ever CAIR San Diego Bystander & Ally Intervention Training. In collaboration with Interfaith Center for Worker Justice of San Diego County this event is open to Muslims and non-Muslims alike and the more diversity the better.

The American Muslim community, among many others, has seen a considerable increase in the number of hate crimes and bias incidents since last November. Incidents like these can be frightening, but turning a blind eye is also not an option anymore.

Our Bystander & Ally Intervention Training will elaborate on how to better act as allies, protect our family, friends, neighbors and colleagues and help dismantle the systematic biases that allow hate to happen. The key word is “DE-ESCALATION.” By learning the basics behind safe and proactive intervention this training will equip you with the proper tools to help a victim of harassment without escalating the situation.

CAIR San Diego‘s Executive Director Hanif Mohebi will be onsite and available as well as our Civil Rights lawyer Susanne Arani. This training is aimed at persons 15+ and above and no prior training is required. See you all there insha’Allah.

TrumanSD Hosts “Responding to White Nationalism”

Saturday, September 16, 6pm
Icon Skybox
321 10th Avenue (Downtown)
For More Information (Tickets)

As the “alt-right” is emboldened to increasing its public demonstrations and actions, it is imperative that communities think about coordinating responses in the interest of maintaining public safety for all its citizens, while reaffirming that our diversity is the very thing which makes our country strong. The violent demonstrations of white nationalists on August 12th in Charlottesville, VA – including the terrorist attack that that left one dead and dozens injured – lays bare the need to take action in response to groups that had once resigned themselves to existing on the fringe of society. This salon will discuss the history of white nationalism, including the “alt-right” and Nazi sympathizing groups in the United States (and San Diego), the current state of affairs, and the way forward. We hope you’ll join the San Diego chapter of the Truman National Security Project in working to push this scourge back into the shadows where they belong. We don’t need to remind anyone what happened last time a group of Nazis took on Truman. That legacy is all of ours to carry forward.

The format is easy – a guided discussion with the featured guests leading. You will enjoy delicious snacks, delightful conversation, and drinks. The rest of the audience will be thought leaders, elected officials, and community leaders from the Southern California region with an interest in learning more about this cancer within our society.
