Not so long ago, I met a man at the Point Loma Living Room for a first date.  The thought went through my mind at that time that I wondered how the place had stayed in business; it was dirty; drab looking; and just didn’t have a nice feeling. (Ed. See Judi’s review from 2013) I don’t know if my never seeing him again had anything to do with the place but…..

I had heard that it had been sold recently, so when Irene and I decided to have brunch together I thought it might be interesting to see if it had changed.  And I am happy to report that it has changed, and for the better!

Since it is next door to Beach Community Acupuncture, a place I frequent weekly, I knew that the parking would be difficult. (I didn’t know that there was work being done on Rosecrans and that I could not park on the street.)  There was one spot left in the lot, and I took it, but it is a challenge worthwhile.

We were met at the counter by Cathy, the new owner.  And she is absolutely delightful with a great personality.  As we were perusing the menu she asked us if we wanted something to drink.  I am not a coffee drinker, but I remember when I went there the other time I was given a coffee drink that was very good.  Except – I didn’t remember what it was.  She asked me all sorts of questions and finally asked me if I like Blackberry, and I answered in the affirmative.  She said she would fix me a special coffee and if I didn’t like it I didn’t have to drink it.  (Not bad for a first time client!).  Well, it was wonderful – blackberry and cream.    I managed to finish the entire glass.

The menu has a Breakfast section, and the Lunch and Dinner sections are together.  (They open at 6:00am and are open until 9pm M-Th, and until 10:00pm Friday-Sunday.)

The breakfast menu starts at $3.95 for a bagel and cream cheese, and goes up to $10.95 for lox and bagel.  There are egg breakfasts, burrito’s, croissants, French Toast, and even a veggie bagel.  Granola, seasonal fruit bowl and Acai or Pitaya bowls are also offered.

The lunch and dinner menu includes a “Lighter Fare” – Soup with bread – and they make all their own soups there. Also included is Hummus, Cheese Quesadilla’s, etc.  They list 3 salads – Chicken & Grapes ($10.95), Chicken Caesar Salad – $10.45, and a Very Berry Salad – $8.95.

The Paninis give you the choice of 1 protein, 4 items and 1 spread for $10.45. Extra protein can be added for $2.25 more.  There is even a Quiche on the menu, and for $10.45 it is served with salad and fruit.

Point Loma Croissant

There are six sandwiches on the menu, starting with a grilled cheese for $7.95, but all sorts of “add-ons” if wanted.  All the sandwiches give you the choice of bread, mustard or mayo, and are served with chips and pickle.  (You can substitute fruit or salad for chips for $2.00).  Their bread comes from “Bread and Cie” and their pastries from “M & M Patisserie” in La Mesa.

I did not see any vegan items on the menu, per se, but I am sure that Cathy would be happy to make something for you if she has it on hand. (Her tortillas are vegan – perhaps a burrito.)  There are several gluten free items also.

There are many kinds of coffees available as well as espresso drinks, tea and cold drinks.  (Cathy told us that she has applied for a beer and wine license, and hopes to receive it by next month.)  There are also plans to turn the upstairs into a private event venue.

So … how was the food?

Club Croissant

Irene ordered the “Club Croissant” for $8.95.  It had eggs, bacon, turkey, cheese and mayo and was served with fruit.  It was a huge croissant, and she ended up taking half of it home.  It was very tasty.

I had the Pt. Loma Croissant for $8.95 .  It consisted of eggs, bacon and cheese, topped with avocado and came with a serving of salsa, and fresh fruit.  It was delicious and the fruit was ripe and refreshing.I also took half of it home.

Our total bill came to just under $25 for the two drinks – Irene had a Sprite -.  There is a tip jar on the counter and we both left tips before we even received our food.  It should also be noted that when Cathy opened the restaurant she was charging a 3% surcharge to offset the change in the minimum wage structure.  That surcharge has been eliminated!

Would we go again?  Yes.  Without question.  Maybe after my next acupuncture session next week!
