It’s been about four years since I last reviewed Supannee House of Thai.   A new friend – Marie – suggested that we meet there for lunch and I am glad that we did.

We arrived at 11:45am, and it was already busy.  There was a large group of people at one table, and five other tables were already taken.  I noticed while we there that there was a steady stream of people coming in for take out as well as dine in.  After looking at the extensive menu I could understand why.

There are 10 appetizers listed, ranging from $6-11.  There are 5 soups that are $5-$10.95, depending on the size of the bowl.  There are 9 salads listed, and they range from $6-11.  The Noodles and Fried Rice menu begin at $10 for mixed veggies, and range to $14 for scallops or seafood.  Five curries are listed from $10-14 as well as 8 stir fries, also ranging from $10-14.  There are seafood and house specials, and they range from $8-25.  There is a notice at the bottom of the menu that states that “gluten-free is available.”

Tom Yum Goong soup

Somewhat of a surprise is their drink menu.  They have 13 white wines listed; 1 Rose; 3 Bubbly; 10 red wines; 10 Beer by the Bottle while having 7 Beer on tap.  There is one non-alcoholic beer as well as one hard cider listed.  There are 5 kinds of Sake; 8 teas; 4 different types of water, and 5 soda’s.

Marie and I were there at the right time, because we could avail ourselves of the Lunch Entrée Specials.  (Ranges from $8.50 for Mixed Veggies to $12 for Seafood.)  Marie had been here before and she started out her meal with an order of Tom Yum Goong soup – $6.  In was loaded with shrimp, scallops, mussels, onions, mushrooms, cilantro, hot peppers, and coconut chicken broth.  It was delicious.

For her entrée she ordered “Drunken Noodle” -$12.  It came with noodles; squid; veggies, etc.  Accompanying the meal was a small salad, an egg roll, rice; watermelon and a tasty sauce.  It was delicious.

Drunken Noodle

I ordered the yellow curry – $8.50, that was made with coconut milk; potatoes, onions and carrots.  It also had a small salad, a slice of watermelon and an egg roll.  It also was very good.

For dessert we ordered sweet rice with succulent slices of mango on the top. The mango was ripe and tasty; the sweet rice was just that – sweet rice. It was an interesting combination.

I also ordered a Thai ice tea that was cold; not too sweet, and a nice addition to my meal.

An aside about our waiter – JJ.  He is a chef in his own right. He was very busy after he took our order, but he followed us outside and we had a wonderful discussion about the Thai Festival coming up in Escondido.   I wish him well in his quest for his own establishment.

Our total bill came to $32.33, not including the tip.

There is no question that I will go back again. I just won’t wait four years for the next time.

Supannee is generally considered one of the top Thai places in SD, if not THE top by most everyone in the food industry here.

The owner, Supannee herself does source many of her veggies from her home garden. Sorry if you mentioned this in Part one.

Sweet sticky rice with mango is a standard Thai dessert that is not seen on enough menus. Did it have a coconut milk poured over it? It’s really fabulous.
