The June 17 Friends meeting was devoted primarily to our annual budget. Our treasurer, Mary Cairns, detailed our current income based on membership dues and estimated book sale proceeds. Due to a variety of reasons, e.g., fewer membership renewals, smaller member donations, and city-wide cutbacks, we are facing a shortfall if we want to fund all the library programs we currently have.

We discussed increasing the number of book sales and other income-producing ideas. This will be the main topic of discussion at our next meeting on July 15th, at 10: 30 am in the Library Annex – 4815 Santa Monica Ave.

Our monthly music concert attendance is increasing.  We recently hosted Alex Ciaverelli of the Django Shredders – a gypsy jazz/modern jazz duo.  He was creative, educational, and delightful! We will host more of this type of program throughout the year.

We purchased more folding chairs so that we can accommodate more people at these events—now if we only had an expanded library!  (hint to City Hall …) Next concert is our very own Youth Librarian: Patrick Grattan, who plays Folk, Pop, Country Rock and Americana.

The self-checkout counter is breaking records! Over 93% of the OB patrons are using the new technology. The OB staff is being treated to a pizza party this week for doing such a great job.  Speaking of great jobs, OB Clerk Jane Stahl is being honored as “SDPL Employee of the Quarter.” Great job, Jane!

The next BOOK SALE is on SATURDAY, JULY 8th from 9:30 am – 1 pm. Volunteers are needed at 8 AM, sorting and organizing for the sale will be held on Friday July 7 from 1-3.

We need so much help pricing and sorting all the many donated books, DVDs and CDs. After July 8th, ongoing book sorting will continue every Tuesday and Friday afternoon from 1 to 3. All helpers welcomed!
