What Would You Have Done?

Throughout our lives we are faced with making decisions.  Some are important; some are not.  Some will change our lives forever; others will make no difference.  Some of our decisions will haunt us forever; some of our decisions we will never remember making.

I had a decision to make last week.  I will not tell you the outcome in this article, but I will respond to it after I hear from you, the reader. Here is what happened:

For the past four years I have talked to – or texted – a man every single day.  In those four years there were only two days that this event did not happen. We were good friends; discussed many different topics.

I talked to this person last Thursday and before hanging up said we would probably talk on Friday.

Friday came and I had a question about a leak in my sink. I sent him a text asking for direction, but did not receive an answer.  Strange, but didn’t think anything of it.

Saturday came and I repeated the question, but, again, no answer. This was so out of character I began to get worried.  Saturday night I called but both his cell phones were turned off.  That really had me worried because he uses his phones for business.

Sunday morning came and I called again.  Same response for the telephones.  This man had a stroke several years ago, and lives in an area where there are no neighbors.  My thoughts were that maybe something had happened and I became alarmed.  Still, I did nothing.

Monday morning I called again.  I texted him also.  Phones both went to voice mail and no answer to my text.

Question to you:  What would you have done next?

Once this is posted by my editor-dude, I will respond to what I did do and what happened two days after this is published.  I am truly interested in your responses.   Thank you.

if he’s not local (and you can’t go check on him) I’d ask for a safety/welfare check. Call the non emergent police line and ask them to do a safety check. I think back about the story where the woman who order a pizza every day–religiously–until she didn’t. http://www.ktre.com/story/14079358/pizza-saves-life-of

Ask for a police welfare check by his local police or sheriff department.

If you can’t notify anyone nearby to check on him , l agree with Andy.

Thank you Andy. Before I tell you what I did, may I ask you a question? My sister’s name was Andy – are you a male or a female?

Thanks.

If he’s local I’d drive by the house to see if there is anything going on there that might give a clue as to what may have happened to him. If no answer and no activity I’d then go to a neighbor to see if they were aware of anything. Absent success there I’d give the police a call and ask for a welfare check and I’d stand by for their arrival. All of this assumes there are no relatives in town one could check with first.

Judi, If the man lives locally, I would go & check on him myself. If the man does not live locally, I would try to get his relative, friend, or neighbor to check on him. If I could not do that, I would call the police where he lives & ask for a welfare check. I hope he is OK & this story has a happy ending.

I agree with the others suggesting a welfare check. I live at the end of a country lane and back in January we were away for an extended weekend. During that time we had concerned calls from a friend living 100 miles away who had been dating our closest neighbor. Unable to get through to him 3 days in a row she asked us to check on him upon our return and, sure enough, this healthy, strapping outdoorsman of 70 had passed away in his sleep. With my experience in mind I’d say one must do SOMETHING!

Judi if the batteries of cell phones are drained, do calls to them register the same as if the phones were turned off?

Leaving a message is still possible. Can’t retrieve it until battery charged

I also would have called the police & ask them to do a welfare check.
I hope everything turned out ok
