Brenna Vega

Guess what’s coming to Sunset Cliffs? It’s Sunset Cliffs Living– a magazine devoted to Sunset Cliffs!

I just spent a delightful hour with Brenna Vega, a young, Point Loma High School Graduate, (2002) with a vision of bringing the community closer together.  (Not only did she go to PLHS, she also went to Loma Portal and Correia.)

After spending time in Los Angeles, New York, and China for the past 7 years, the draw of home brought her back to San Diego where she is fulfilling a dream of a magazine devoted to our community.  She deems it a “social magazine for the residents of Sunset Cliffs, and is focusing on the areas of Sunset Cliffs east to Catalina; south to the college; and Sunset Cliffs to the end at Ladera.”

She expects to have her magazine delivered to over 1000 homes by USPS at no charge to the residents. The first issue should reach our mailboxes by May 15th!

I saw a prototype of the magazine and must say I was very impressed with the copy.  The front cover will feature a family from the area, and inside the magazine will be a two page spread about that family. Every month will feature a new family.  There will be a restaurant review, and there is already a date set up for the first review at Hugo’s, on March 14th at 6:30pm.  (If you would like to join Brenna and me please RSVP via obragblog@gmail.com Attention judi curry)

She will be having “meet-ups” every month where the neighborhood can get together and discuss items of interest affecting all of us. Note: No political issues are allowed!

Every month a different child will be featured; every month a different athlete will be featured.  The only requirement is that the person lives in the designated Sunset Cliffs area.

One of the features that will occur monthly is one that I like – that is “the Pet of the Month!”  As Brenna said, “some people love their pets more than humans.”

There will also be the “surfer” of the month; a new recipe of the month written by our neighborhood cooks! Additionally there will be a free business guide; a charity spotlighted in each magazine; local events for the month, etc.

You have to agree that this is a very ambitious endeavor on Brenna’s part, and she does everything herself, but after meeting with her I have no qualms about her meeting her objective. Her biggest mantra is “giving back to the community.”

It should be noted that there will not be any digital presence – no on-line internet. This is strictly a magazine to be delivered to the residents of Sunset Cliffs.

I, for one, am looking forward to the first issue of this magazine. And remember, if you want to be part of this history and want to join us at Hugo’s on March 14th, let me know (via obragblog@gmail.com )

I assume this goes to Brenna. If not, Judy, you are probably not interested in this paragraph. I would love to receive the magazine, and am curious about advertising in it. I was one of the two founders of a meditation center in Ocean Beach where I taught for 18 years. Now I am taking a hiatus. Soon I will be putting the word out ‘there’ that I have a private practice where I teach meditation and counsel through Sand Play Yoga. I am an American Buddhist Monk, an interfaith minister, and have a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Education.

You will automatically get the magazine about May 15. I will forward this on to Brenna in case she does not see it. OK to give her your address?
