Amanda Cruz Visiting From Arizona Vanished Over the Weekend
A young woman visiting San Diego for the first time from Arizona has reportedly gone missing – and her car with her purse and backpack were found near Sunset Cliffs on Monaco Street.
30-year-old Amanda “Mandy” Cruse vanished over the weekend. At her hotel in Point Loma, there is surveillance footage showing her leaving about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Her family presumes she left early to photograph the sunrise – as her high-quality digital camera was missing. This was the last time she was seen and no one has heard from her since.
Mandy is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 115 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. When she left the hotel, she was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans, and black and white Converse shoes.

Police tracked her cellphone using an iPhone app, which led them to her parked vehicle on Monaco Street near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. (The San Diego U-T reported that her car was found “on Monroe Avenue”, clearly a typo as there is no Monroe Ave in Point Loma.)
Posters of Mandy – presumably put up by her family – state that she has been missing since Saturday between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
Cruse’s brother-in-law Tait Elkie confirmed that her vehicle was traced to the area Tuesday. There is no evidence of foul play, at this point. The family has fears that Cruz may have slipped off a cliff or rock and drowned in the Pacific. Elkie told the U-T:
“We just don’t know for sure. We’re looking for any help.”
Her purse and backpack were found in the car underneath some clothing.
Cruz had driven to town alone from Scottsdale, Ariz. on Saturday and had planned to stay until Monday, her brother-in-law said.
Police asked anyone with information about Cruse’s whereabouts to call the department at (619) 531-2000 or a detective at (619) 531-2277.

Editor Comment: There are some possible discrepancies here. The U-T article states she left the hotel at 4:30 a.m. to take photos of the sunrise and then her car is found near Sunset Cliffs. And that was the last time she had been seen – in the video at the hotel. Locals understand that it is difficult to take pics of the sunrise on that side of Point Loma – unless she was looking for reflected light, etc. Now, the “missing” poster of Mandy states she went missing between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm – prime time for taking photos of sunsets – not sunrises.
