“Indivisible” Leaders Plan Comprehensive Campaign to Sway Congress
February 7 “Resist Trump Tuesday” Targets Feinstein, Harris, Issa, Hunter
POINT LOMA, CA – More than 60 San Diegans united in Point Loma on Saturday, Jan. 4th to defeat President Trump’s agenda through direct advocacy to members of Congress, and other elected officials.
Representing many of the five dozen “Indivisible” groups that have formed in the San Diego region since the election, the leaders met to network and strategize to maximize their impact through collective action.
The overflow crowd had to move to a larger room at a Point Loma community center to accommodate the attendees, who hailed from Alpine, Ramona, La Mesa, Carlsbad, Capitol Heights, La Jolla, Point Loma, Fallbrook, Tierrasanta and many other communities.
They were constituents of Representatives Darrell Issa (R-District 49), Duncan Hunter (R-District 50), Scott Peters (D-District 52) and Susan Davis (D-District 53).
The group announced “Resist Trump Tuesday” constituent visits and rallies for February 7, 2017 at the following offices:
- Temecula office of Rep. Hunter (10 a.m.),
- the Vista office of Rep. Issa (10 a.m.),
- and the downtown San Diego offices of Senator Feinstein (12 p.m.)
- and Senator Harris (1 p.m.)
“Together, San Diegans stand indivisible in our intent to stop President Trump and hold our public officials accountable,” said Mike Garcia of La Mesa. “San Diego’s elected leaders, from Congress to the state legislature to local officeholders, are on notice that your leadership, or lack of it, will determine whether we are with you or against you in your next election. This movement has only just begun and wise politicians will adjust their sails and join us, or be tossed overboard by the storm.”
Indivisible, a new organization with more than 4,500 local chapters, is catalyzing a national, Tea Party-style movement among progressives. It was launched following publication of an online guide, written by former Congressional staffers, modeled on Tea Party actions that stymied President Obama’s agenda and overthrew Democratic control of Congress in his first mid-term elections.
In addition to lobbying federal officials, the group leaders also discussed strategies to engage Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the region’s state officeholders to resist the Trump agenda on immigration, health care, the environment, the border wall and other issues.
Saturday’s attendees represented multiple groups, including MoveOn, San Diego Progressives, Occupy San Diego, Together We Will (an offshoot of the Facebook group Pantsuit Nation), former organizers for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, and many others. They determined to unite under the Indivisible banner to pressure elected officials to support their views or be voted out of office.
