Concerns have been raised about the possible opening of a liquor store in the building that holds once held Karen’s Consignment Gallery.
The site at 4051 Voltaire Street, at the corner of Voltaire and Wabaska Drive, is in a small mall that has other businesses, the owner of one at least is so concerned that he is organizing neighbors and other concerned people to the upcoming local Point Loma planning committee meeting.
The folks at Karen’s are definitely opposed to the liquor store. Rob Murry, the owner of Karen’s said:
Business is good as we celebrate our 25th year and we love our OB customers!
The proposed liquor store would go in right next to us and the Paper Moon music center; we are adamantly opposed to it going into our small neighborhood center.
On the agenda for the Thursday night meeting of the Point Loma Community Planning Board is a Conditional Use Permit by applicant Jason Greminger of Sunshine on Voltaire,
The application is for a “Coastal Development Permit for the sale of Alcohol for off -site consumption in an existing 1,874 SF commercial space on a 0.71 acre site (Process3 )”.
The Board meets Thursday, February 16th, 2017 at 6:30 to 9:00 PM, at the Point Loma Library / Hervey Branch Library, located at 3701 Voltaire Street, San Diego, CA 92107.

This is just where Sunshine liquor is moving to from a block away. Sunshine has been there for years, this should not be an issue.
Sunshine Liquor used to be 1 block east on Voltaire.

Karen’s needs to focus on their business….it needs a facelift, …how about some attractive window displays? Make the corner impressive as this area of town changes and grows.
I hope Sunshine will be making salads and sandwiches also :-)
Why are the neighboring businesses organizing against another neighborhood business relocating into an empty spot in their shopping complex? I literally live less than a block away and couldn’t be happier that Sushine is moving to a new spot!! I love that Karen’s and the other local businesses comprise this corner. Let’s welcome another that so many of us in the neighborhood have been missing – you know- since they had to close their store a couple blocks down the street.
Geoff — A liquor store that used to be a block away is quite a bit different than one that pops up right next door to you, don’t you think? At any rate, that’s a pretty small footprint to handle the increased car & foot traffic a liquor store would generate, not to mention the sometimes, um, less-than-sterling clientele. Plus, Paper Moon Music Studio has dozens of young music students & their parents traipsing in and out every afternoon — is a liquor store really the best business model for that area???
Well Rick, if you intend to protest the store relocation, you will have to do better than what you’ve offered here. What we have is a liquor store moving from one small commercial center on the east side of Nimitz to a small commercial center on the west side of Nimitz. It’s not moving into a residential area. As for the small footprint, if you are familiar with the old location, it was a cramped parking area of four or five spaces so it operated well with a small footprint. Regarding you comment about the “less-than-sterling clientele,” you’ve just disparaged everyone who has shopped at Sunshine, including me I might add. Regular people shop at liquor stores, in fact, I’d venture to say that the majority of the clientele is made up of good people. Your comment makes me wonder if you are a non-drinker. I see no reason to fear for all of the music studio students and parents either but your comment about the liquor store not being the best business model for the area again makes me wonder that you have a prejudice against alcohol. Liquor stores are a part of urban life. If you can come up with some statistics from a reputable source that shows increased problems around liquor stores in Pt. Loma, then maybe you’d have something, but I doubt it. I’m not promoting Sunshine’s move but neither do I see the harm in it. The people behind the store counter have always been friendly and polite, it was not a dive before and I’m sure it won’t be when it moves.
