Christopher Perez was walking along Sunset Cliffs  around 10:45 p.m. Friday night, Dec. 9th, and when he came to Ladera Street – the end of the boulevard -he noticed a figure down on the beach below.

“I yelled and no one answered. It looked like a figure so I went down there to check things out and he wasn’t moving,” Perez told 10News.  10News

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) was called, and discovered that an man died on the beach after tumbling at least 50 feet down the cliffs. Emergency crews tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on the beach.  His name has not been released.

Details are unclear. On Saturday morning, San Diego Police stated that the incident was under investigation – looking to answer questions such as did he fall, did he jump, was he pushed? Was he alone or with friends? Police said it does not appear that the man experienced any sort of medical emergency before the plunge.

It was just about exactly one year ago that a man visiting from the mid-west fell to his death off the cliffs, while viewing his mobile device.  Another man slipped to his death in July 2014 near Ladera Street along the cliffs.

The Dec. 25, 2015 incident appeared to us then that year – 2015 – looked to be the worst in terms of deaths and injuries. But this past year, 2016, has definitely had its share.

We have published a chronicle of deaths and serious injuries that have occurred at or around Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach and Point Loma over the last 10 to 12 years, with the main chronicle from 2005 through 2015: we have reported on more recent incidents in an effort to supplemented it. Our overall findings:

We found that there has been at least an average of three deaths and serious injuries every year during that period.
