The Night that Democracy Died in America

american-flags-half-mast-2Sometime after 2 a.m. eastern standard time – in the middle of the late night, Hillary Clinton – who won the popular vote for President – phoned Donald Trump and made her concession. He had won the electoral vote.

In an historic rebellion of the white, working-class, half of American voters used democratic means to elect a man who does not understand the Constitution, who does not respect the Bill of Rights, and who does not believe in democracy.

It is an irony, then, that a radical regime was voted into power that represents the greatest threat in 40 years to what is left of American democracy. Words do matter. With the threats and promises made by our new President-elect over the course of the last year and a half, it’s clear that not since the time of Richard Nixon have the civil rights of Americans been so openly splayed out on the chopping block as they are now – or will be in a few months.

From his pledge to investigate Clinton, to his threats against journalists, against Muslims, Mexican-Americans, to his promise to  stack a Supreme Court that will dismantle Roe v Wade, to his cloaked war-mongering and causality about nuclear warheads, to his disbelief in climate change, Trump has laid out enough of his basic policies for us to take him at his word.

And importantly, we’ll never know what effect the FBI “intervention” into the Presidential campaign had on the election. Rogue, pro-Trump FBI agents actively and illegally worked to undermine Clinton’s campaign, raising the specter of a “coup d’etat“.  Clinton however never made it an issue, although Tim Kaine did. Mainstream press didn’t cause much of a ripple with the scandal. The Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune, for example, to this day have never written directly about the FBI intervention.

In his victory speech in the wee hours at that glitzy ballroom – in a building in Manhattan surrounded by dump trucks for security reasons, Trump reached out his small hand to Clinton and all others he had misaligned over the months. He called for a national healing, for the country to come together – come together away from all of its divisions – divisions, of course, that he had a direct role in creating.

We’ve heard a lot of nice words this morning, Clinton’s public concession speech and President Obama’s conciliatory speech. But both Clinton and Obama made remakes of how they “hope” Trump will abide by the smooth transition of government, by our laws and will keep America inclusive. Since when did the defeated presidential candidate and the sitting President ever in our modern history have to express public concerns that the incoming regime will continue the rule of law and follow the Constitution?

Perhaps only half of Trump’s supporters are racist – clearly most wanted some kind of radical economic change overall, but many have demonstrated that they’re willing to follow a strong, authoritarian leader who uses racist code words to ramp up the more white nationalist base and alternative radical right.

This all means that what we still have of our democratic rights are up for grabs and the trembeling democratic institutions will be shaken to their foundations.

I want to repeat: Hillary Clinton won the popular vote – but by less than 200,000 votes nation-wide (as of this writing). That means this country is more divided than ever – and more evenly divided now more than ever. But it also means more people voted for a woman President than voted for Donald Trump. More people voted for Hillary’s inclusiveness than for Trump’s divisiveness.

Yet America is entering a dark period of our existence. In a few months, we’ll be in a period – politically-speaking – of One Party Rule, where Republicans will control all 3 branches of government. The Republicans will control the White House, the House of Representatives, the Senate, and with Trump’s nominees – the Supreme Court – for decades to come.  Republicans also control most state assemblies. (Sure, there are divisions within the GOP and Trumpland – but they are quickly mending before our eyes.)

This clamp by one political power on all the apparatus of state power represents an extremely dangerous situation for our freedoms.

Yes, many nice words were spoken this morning. (Perhaps they were meant to calm all the markets.)

But we in the progressive and independent media don’t have to mince our words. We are in and of the Fourth Estate – the real free press. We can still call things as we see them – for awhile more, at least. We can still say and write things like “Donald Trump is a fascist,” and remain content that police agents won’t be knocking on our doors or disrupting our internet connections.

Many in the press and from many corners, on the left – and on the right – called Donald Trump a fascist during the course of this long campaign.  Just because he’s now President-elect and will assume the mantles of the Executive Branch, walking into the Oval Office, does not mean that he no longer represents a fascist force in this country.

America has never quite been in this type of precarious situation as it is right now over the course of most of our life times. We’ve never been here before.

Perhaps, the easiest analogy for us now is the model provided by the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany during the 1920s and thirties. Hitler made all kinds of promises to the German working class, for jobs, to make Germany great again – he was a populist – and he was able to mobilize the masses – with many lies. Hitler was legally elected to power but by way less than a majority. But once in, he and his party grabbed the reins of the government apparatus, trampled the German constitution, jailed or killed all his opponents, and violently forged a one-party government. What he did after that is the most horrible period in human history. Murdering 6 million Jews, millions of others, starting World War II.

But America is different than Germany in the thirties. America does have a democratic tradition that goes back 240 years. Germany had nothing like that.

America does still have a Constitution and Bill of Rights that have weathered changes over time. Germany had nothing like that. We also have values of “fairness” and social justice and inclusivity. Not so Germany – although it had a huge left-wing.

We also have a tradition of a military that does not engage in domestic politics. Not so in Prussian Germany.

America still has a free press – somewhat. However, we just witnessed how the mainstream, corporate media enabled Trump’s campaign. The inaccuracy of the polls and pundits displayed their failures in full view over the course of this campaign.

And there are many things that need to be said about this election – and there will be time for them.

But there is still an independent and progressive press, mostly online, that is not beholden to powerful interests – except those interests of the People.

Now, more than ever, we will need that independent press. We will need media institutions like the OB Rag and the San Diego Free Press. (Our sisters and brothers at the SDFP by the way have experienced record-breaking numbers of readership over the course of the last several weeks – over 20,000 readers just yesterday.)

There is a hunger in OB and San Diego and elsewhere for the truth. For telling it like is – no matter what power is insulted or criticized. No matter what government official is taken to task.

In the meantime, support your local independent press – it’s one of the ways we’ll survive Trump Nation. And it’s one of the ways we can resurrect our democracy.

The Democrats had a winning & extremely popular Presidential candidate but chose instead to torpedo Bernie Sanders to pave way for Democrat Party’s most unpopular candidate in history. The DNC truly believes its own bullshit — proof’s in pudding.

Both parties are done now. Wow!

Only the best to you Frank G. for staring at the beast calmly and telling us
what you’re seeing equally calmly. Right now, the only good thing I see
coming is an outpouring of serious thought and serious writing in reaction
to what looks like a catastrophe. Yes, it does seem democracy in America
has died, even if the Democratic Party’s corpse will wander on for a while.

While I’m not satisfied with last nights result, what happened is by definition democracy at its core. The people voted how the people saw fit. The result is not the death of democracy but should be an eye opener and a realization that enough people are unhappy with the current political landscape and the state of our country to elect a representative of radical change. Who knows how this played out, but to call the outcome the death of democracy is a cop-out.

Funny how many have compared Hillary Clinton to Nixon – paranoia, secrecy, etc.
The Wikileaks have revealed the lengths to which Clinton, the DNC, and much media went to deny millions of Americans their rightful choice this time – Bernie Sanders.
This was the year of the outsider in politics, and only one outsider remained – and won.
We can’t have the greatest income inequality since the 1920s and expect people not to push back. Trump is a wild card for sure, but continuing the same old same old just would not do this year. All shame on the DNC.

Frank, you make me laugh.

You say there is a hunger for the truth, yet don’t mention Hillary Clinton’s glaring aversion to telling the truth. Ask Bernie about it.

Both candidates are greatly flawed. This should be quite an entertaining four years. Thankfully most of my streased out OB neighbors will cope with legal weed.

What to do next? I believe democrats should take the playbook from Frank Luntz. Luntz is one of the key figures behind the GOP obstruction that has plagued Washington since Obama was elected President eight years ago. The famed Republican wordsmith was one of the organizers behind the infamous inauguration night dinner in 2009.
It was at that dinner, as Obama was celebrating his inauguration as America’s first black president, that Luntz and other influential Republicans gathered and decided that they would cause as much gridlock as possible in order to regain control of the House, Senate and White House. Republicans gained control of the House in 2010 during the Tea Party wave, thanks mostly to their objections over healthcare reform. Despite not winning the Senate or White House in 2012, the GOP continued their obstructionist tactics throughout Obama’s second term.
8 years later republicans now control the House, Senate and the White House. Our country blamed the Washington Elite and Democrats voted against Hillary (more of the same Elites).
Now is the time for Democrats to remove the Elites of the party. Bernie’s organization has shown we have progressive leaders not afraid of the Republicans and angry at the DNC Elite that lead the party to complete disaster.
Progressive Democrats demonstrating in the streets today across the country against the Billionaires pick for president shows we do have a way to stop their agenda. No compromise! Gridlock! Protest! Republicans want to remake this country for their Billionaire paymasters. This is the time to take off the gloves and FIGHT!

Just one reminder at this point: The popular vote shows that the PEOPLE did NOT vote for Trump – by 233,404 votes at this time. I, for one, feel that we need to put the Bernie/HRC wars behind us and address how this election outcome will impact our chidren. A picture of the president hangs in every school office in this country. As a grandmother and retired teacher I was sobbing yesterday, at that thought of our children having Trump’s image and what he represents (so counter to the ideals of curiosity, discussion, fairness, collaboration, global and humanitarian interest, even humor – as one of my tutorees pointed out – that our schools strive for) as the model of our country’s “leadership.” My 3-year-old granddaughter will see that image hanging in the school office when she starts kindergarten and it brings me great pain. Yes, the electoral system (which HRC did not, single-handedly, plan and implement over the past 200 years – I’m sure there’s a “myth” that she’s responsible for that mess too) is extremely flawed, from the influence of $ to the electoral college, and if Bernie/HRC/Other People of Reason don’t come together (rather than ranting, as I’m doing now) to make changes, we may yet see another election taken from the people, just as we’ve seen happen twice in the last 16 years. To start, I suggest a People’s Inaugural “Parade” in SD on, or as close to, inauguration day as possible.

Reply

RB November 10, 2016 at 12:02 pm

The election system is not flawed. We are a Republic. All the states in the union are protected by the Electoral College and the Senate from the big, elite managed states of New York and California.

The Constitution is flawed (yes on slavery, no on women’s suffrage).

The Electoral College is flawed.

Two U.S. senators from each state is ridiculous. Idaho population: 586, 107
California: 39,150, 428

Reply

RB November 10, 2016 at 2:27 pm

Having pure population represented in the House and having small states and minority populations represented in the Senate was genius…… Idaho’s population with it’s equal Senate power prevents bullies in California from dumping their trash (garbage or extreme ideas) upon their smaller state.

I hope you’re aware of just how small an island you, the SDFP and others are on.
The mainstream newsmedia – all of them, including MSNBC, CNN to a lesser degree NPR and even AP – were not just complicit in normalizing and enabling Trump. They also severely weakened Hillary with innuendo, insinuation and subtle exclusions to convince the public that her email decisions were equal to Trumps multitude of disqualifying issues.
There’s been a lot of talk about the GOP’s purity test that’s gutted the party of any but the most ideological politicians.
What’s never talked about is the newsmedia’s purity test. For 35 years America’s journalists have despised the Clinton’s and no matter how many times they’re cleared of any illegality the press always talk about how the Clinton’s are secretive. How they skirt the rules and always exist just on the line of legality. Well you know what? That’s NOT a crime. For a politician that’s pretty much where they all live. One difference is that because of the media’s obsession with the Clinton’s there’s very little we don’t know about them.
Back to that purity test I mentioned. Without getting into the “why” of it there exists the simple fact that if you are a journalist that has started your career over the past three decades and you’ve tried to make it into cable news there’s is an expectation that you believe or at least pretend to believe in the Clinton Scandal Narrative. Anyone who bucks that gets pushed down and is rarely allowed to rise very high.
Even Joy Reid who’s become a symbol for Democrats of good journalism always skates around the Narrative. She’s great at calling out lies with politicians and surrogates but you’ll never catch her calling out other journalists on other networks when they lie about the Clinton’s.
We’ve seen Chuck Todd, Mark Halperin, Andrea Mitchell and even Jake Tapper snidely talk about the Clinton Scandals and their secrecy.
For the past year mainstream newsmedia have – drop by drop – poison the public perception of Hillary as dishonest – even though it’s been proven multiple times that she’s one of the most honest politicians to ever run for president.
There’s a culture within cable news that is directly responsible for the outcome of this election.
Donald Trump doesn’t communicate telepathically with voters and neither did Clinton. The newsmedia are the conduit that America gets its information from. Voters didn’t magically decide Trump was more trustworthy when all the facts show otherwise and neither did they decide Hillary’s emails were somehow equal to sexual assault, racism, misogyny, xenophobia or white supremacy. They were fed that narrative every single day by news shows. The press are the one filter and conduit through which Americans formed their opinions and had they done any research on their own they would have voted differently.
They willingly surrendered their judgement to the daily press coverage and the press fed them the narrative that led to Trump winning.
Maybe they thought it would be such an obvious blowout that they HAD to put their finger on the scale but it’s very hard to deny they did.
They appeared as shocked as everyone else when he won no doubt because they trusted the polls. Trusted that they only did enough to make it a race.
But he won instead. I’m pretty sure the heads of CNN and MSNBC didn’t really care. Either way they have four years of juicy coverage. In fact way more juicy than if Hillary won so maybe this IS the outcome they wanted.
If they change their mind they know all they have to do is just bend the narrative to whatever they want. After all, it’s clear the american public won’t bother to do any homework that might interfere with the outcome they want.
Enjoy the island you’re on. I sincerely hope you expand the ground you’re on. I’m a strong advocate of what you do and others like yourself. But until Americans start doing the thinking for themselves – doing the homework – it just won’t matter.

None of what you wrote was could be considered “news”.

Even though Bernie Sanders polled better than Hillary over and over during primary season Democratic Party honchos continued to push their tarnished candidate who was under investigation by FBI for indisputable clear security breaches.

I am confidant had DNC promoted fair primaries/caucuses Bernie would be President elect based upon sheer and gaining popularity his campaign had.

As for Bernie and the DNC they have nothing to do with what I wrote.
Whether or not Sanders could have won or the DNC in some way “cheated” him has been litigated to death and I have no interest in arguing that with you or anyone else.

Colin Powell advised Hillary staffers more two years ago to not bring him into but instead to own it and move on. Sounds like sage advice untaken.

It’s over and unsurprisingly Hillary lost. She was a beatable candidate in 2008 and 2016. The DNC is to blame for all this and heads ahould be rolling.

Accept president-elect Trump? He said that he saw “thousands and thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey cheering the attacks of 9/11. That is a lie. Trump mocked the disabled reporter who exposed that lie. Trump said he saw a photo of Ted Cruz’s father “having breakfast with Lee Harvey Oswald”; there is no such photo. Trump said that Putin did not invade Ukraine. Putin invaded Ukraine.

Trump insulted African-Americans, Latinos, Muslims, and women. If Trump’s views are acceptable, what might unacceptable look like?

Painting Trump as a buffoon with a loose tongue and a loose grasp of the truth is the exact mistake his primary opponents, the GOP, the Press and yes, the voters keep making. Even those criticisms normalize him as something familiar and recognizable. He’s neither.

There was a lot of talk about temperament but not enough. He doesn’t just have a child’s temperament when it comes to conflict and interpersonal relationships – his reactions are those of a child with severe emotional disorders.
These aren’t meant to be insults – they’re actual conclusions based on his past behaviour. Behaviour we’ve all seen and is well documented.

He IS a real danger to the country.

We’ve seen in the past few weeks that he can be insulated from the press by his inside circle. Enough that the Press with their stunningly short memory can be fooled into thinking he’s manageable. But the past year and a half should have taught us that he WILL break out of it and he WILL do or say something provocative.

As a candidate it was embarrassing and controversial. As a president it can and likely will be catastrophic.

Everyone is happy to blame the Parties or the candidates or the Press but no one has the spine to touch the third rail and place the blame where it largely belongs – the voters.

Before you start getting bent out of shape I said “largely”. Not completely and not only.
It’s irrational and frankly stupid to talk about the voters as if they’re this sacred and untouchable group.

Parties have a responsibility to put in place qualified candidates. Candidates have a responsibility to make their case effectively to voters and the Press has a responsibility to make sure our electorate is accurately informed.

All of those failed at one level or another (in my opinion the Press failed particularly badly).

But voters also have a responsibility. We have never lived in a time when there was this much information available to anyone who wants it. But in spite of that voters worked hard to make sure they were as cut off from reality as possible. They stayed in their happy echo chambers online and in real life.

Every single institution that checked showed that not only was Trump the least truthful candidate to ever run – and listed the literally thousands of lies he’s told – but that Hillary was the most honest candidate that ran on either side.

*I’ve seen normally rational people react to that last sentence I wrote with either laughter or anger and they’ll then proceed to start listing all the reasons it can’t be true. Only problem is that all of their “reasons” come with no proof. The data showing these results is directly verifiable with data. If you can’t accept actual data then there’s no point in you reading any further.*

Back to the point: when polls were done, every single one of them showed voters believed HE was more honest. Both Dems and Reps. And by a large margin.

There’s audio, video, documentation, transcripts and even court documents that can be checked in the real world but instead our precious voters preferred to believe what a friend said, or their FB or Twitter feed said.

There’s interview after interview where reporters presented Trump voters with physical proof of something about Trump and they told the reporter they didn’t care what the proof was – they believed their gut. They believed what they felt.

So be annoyed or outraged at it if you want but voters were wrong. Dead wrong. And we’ll pay the price for many years.

It’s worth noting by the way that the majority of our sacred voters were against de-segregation, against women getting the vote, against interracial marriage, against many things that we now take for granted. Many times thanks to politicians that had the spine to take actions even when voters said no.

It’s likely in my view that Trump will be impeached, resign or even go to jail (sweet irony) before his first year or two is complete. But until then I think he should be confined as much as possible.

I really don’t give a damn if you think it makes me a hypocrite but I say everyone in Washington should do everything they can to cripple, short circuit and shut Trump down after January 20th. “Working with him” will get you EXACTLY what it got Ryan and Priebus – a big fat nothing.
There are NO examples of people working with him that got anything they wanted.

If Washington and especially Democrats want to do what they always do and roll over and show their belly in the name of compromise and bipartisanship then they’ll get what they deserve.

Trump will always be Lucy with the football.

Always.

Reply

triggerfinger November 14, 2016 at 12:47 pm

Ok then let’s take that a step further and say that 27.0% of voting-age Americans picked Hillary, vs. 26.7% for Trump.

The electoral college is another matter worth discussing for next time around. It’s quite clear that the electoral college overrepresents voters in lesser populated states, DC, and all the swing states. It’s also quite clear to me that no one would be crying about the popular vote or the electoral college had Hillary won the election. And you can’t change the goalposts after the fact. Both candidates were going after the electoral college. A popular vote contest would result in even more polarized campaigning and a very different process, and certainly a different vote count than what happened last week.

If you can make something good of this mess, rather than more noise and divisiveness, then more power to you. But don’t preach to the choir. Preach to the 73% of the population that didn’t vote for Hillary.

The New York Times published an article April 22, 2017 titled- Comey tried to shield the F.B.I. from politics. Then he shaped an election. Google those words for an excellent update on this important news. Also, Nate Silver has tweeted that- ” It’s painfully obvious that James Comey letter cost Hillary Clinton the election.” I think that the truth is slowly creeping into society’s collective thick skull. People talk about the many reasons why Hillary lost the election, but when an election is stolen, do those other reasons really matter ? If they do, then shouldn’t we at least also be talking about the main reason ? Frank, you were on top of this way before the mainstream media. Thank you. And yes, it’s deeper than people think.
