A shooting that involved roommates occurred on Ebers Street Monday, August 8th, around 5 p.m.

Jeffrey Renteria, 30, was sent to a local hospital after being shot three times by his girlfriend’s brother. He is expected to recover.

The shooting suspect is in police custody, claiming self-defense.

According to law enforcement, Renteria and the unidentified brother of his girlfriend, Becky Touchtone, had been arguing for most of the day inside the house they all share on Ebers near Muir Street in north OB.

Neighbors apparently heard the shots and witnessed Renteria run outside, yelling for someone to call 9-1-1.  He collapsed near of an alley up the street, leaving a trail of blood. Fortunately for him the 2 neighbors who reached him were a nurse and an ex-Navy corpsmen. They aided Renteria until paramedics arrived.

Police also have stated that a man called to say that he shot someone in self-defense. Darlene Crowson told NBC 7, that:

“I heard four gunshots, ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop.'”

Celia Corral said:

“I heard a gunshot and I thought it was on the news. He seemed to be very coherent. His wounds were super no bueno. Not good.”

Neighbor Tony George told FOX 5 that he heard 4 loud shots, and soon after heard a man’s call for help. George said:

“I could hear ‘Help me, help me!'”

Meanwhile, Renteria is recovering at UCSD Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries – to his right side with at least one to his abdomen.
