5109-5111 Brighton Project Also on Agenda
Of special interest to many OBceans is the newly planned 7-Eleven coming into Ocean Beach. And it’s on the OB Planning Board agenda for Wednesday, August 3rd.
The 7-Eleven corporation wants to take over 1801 Sunset Cliffs where a dry cleaner currently sits, and kitty-corner from another local market – the Olive Tree.
This would be OB’s second 7-Eleven store. Reportedly, the dry cleaner has another year on its lease, and 7-Eleven wants to hear from the community.

Also on the agenda is the application for a conditional use permit to demolish 2 existing houses and construct 2 single-family units at 5109 – 5111 Brighton Avenue.
The meeting is held at the OB Recreation Center, 4726 Santa Monica Avenue and begins promptly at 6pm in the community meeting room.

That dry cleaner is famous! It was featured several times in the TV series shot in OB, Terriers.
Yea, I used to use that same dry cleaning business for years when I lived in that area. I seem to recall that it is a fairly old building, and 7-11 would naturally tear it down – not enough history there I’m afraid to keep the structure.
Kids, we still live under capitalism, and the capitalists rule. In this case, 7-11 decides it wants the corner of Sunset Cliffs and Narragansett. Who can stop it?
Well, sometimes, when the people get together, they can hold the capitalists to the fire of truth, and have a say in how the community is managed.
Well… I know when I go to the Olive Tree I don’t say… “Gee, I sure wish there was a 7-11 here so I could now get the items Olive Tree didn’t have”.
Come on… Olive Tree employs good folks and they have high quality products. Neither of which I can say about the trolls that work at 7-11, nor the shite they stock. How bout a dispensary? Oh wait… schools, churches, neighborhood. How bout a brewery? Doesn’t seem to matter about schools, churches, neighborhoods… drunks are welcome! Stoners… maybe jail. Wait, where was I???
Wikipedia reports that 7-11 is Japanese owned & has over 59,000 stores.
One more ain’t gonna hurt nobody. Let’s have a parade for it in about a year.

Actually another Starbucks or coffee spot might be better than a 7-11.
There was a 7-11 store on that corner back in the sixties. It’s where I drank my first Slurpie. In my view of History, OB wasn’t ruined by 7-11, Denny’s, or Jack in the Box. OB was ruined by the construction of all the rabbit-hutch apartment buildings.
Larry ? the exact location? Before Olive Tree there was a small, dingy market but don’t recall a 7-11 kittycorner.
Ya, same corner. I think it’s the same building that was specially built to be a 7-11. Mid sixties. The days of butch wax and Tang. Late Jetson Era, just before the arrival of Star Trek. The Slurpie machine was a modern marvel, but the comic book selection was better at Para’s bookstore on Newport Avenue.
The dingy market you mentioned, was part of a chain of 3 markets called Day and Night Market (or Day & Nite?) Yes, gasp…chain stores. We survived that, too.

A locally-owned coffee place would be preferable to a 7-11.
Oh wow — this is going to be a hot one with 7-11 on the agenda.
With Olive Tree, Victory Liquor, and OB Donuts — with its beloved coffee and donuts — all right there — 7-11 might just find itself unwelcome in this location.
Mia litter in OB comes from convenience stores. No thanks
I lived there in the 60’s and it WAS a Speedee Mart before so 7-11 is the same thing so we had no problems then! The old store across from it was called Day & Night market.
We did NOT need another Pharmacy, yet we now have a CVS 4 blocks from Ride-Aid rather than a grocery store. OB doesn’t need something that it already has, especially a convenient store. WE NEED A GROCERY STORE!
Just to be clear…I don’t support a 7-11 at the old location or anywhere near there. If you can’t find what you want at the Olive Tree Market, then talk to the management about adding that product. That’s how Mom and Pop shops are supposed to work.
One last note about the History of food stores in OB….The Peoples Food Store started in an old house on Voltaire. A health food store doesn’t need to be really big, and have lots of parking.
