Our neighbor to the east, Liberty Station, has been nominated for 2 Orchid Awards. And both nominations are for historic preservation. Plus Liberty Station is packed with free events in August.
The Lot
The first Orchid Award nomination is The Lot and here are quotes from the nominee’s website :
The Lot Liberty Station opened to the public on May 5, 2016, and provides a luxurious, comfortable dining, drinking and cinematic experience to Point Loma’s thriving and vibrant Liberty Station community.
The Lot Liberty Station features unique design elements that pay homage to the building’s original function as the Naval Training Center’s epicenter of military troop training and entertainment … previously known as LUCE Auditorium, originally a 2,200-seat projector and screen theater, equipped with Cinema Scope …. LUCE Auditorium once was the center of social life and troop training in Point Loma ….
The building sat empty for 17 years before the development and restoration team … rehabilitated the building — [its] design preserves the building’s original oak stage and exposed concrete proscenium, where curtains once hung. … [It] also features a completely glass-enclosed café, bar and indoor/outdoor restaurant space that lends itself to an eclectic balance of reinvented use in a rehabilitated historic building.
Word has spread already and locals have started convening at The Lot– dining and catching an air conditioned movie. Or attending the salsa dancing on Sunday afternoons (cover, $10).
The Arts District
The other Orchid nomination is for The Arts District – an area to the north of Vons and Trader Joes, near Ace hardware and Slaters 50-50. And is home to restaurants, shops, and the Women’s Museum of California.
Here are quotes which the nominee’s website states:
Recent redevelopment [at Liberty Station] has focused on the booming northern end arts & hospitality focused Arts District sector, a 100-acre section of restored barracks, commissary stations, and gardens ….,
Throughout the new north end Arts District, various shops and restaurants have repurposed former military barracks while intently preserving vestiges of the building’s original use. The former naval firehouse is home to Fireside, a live fire cookery from local restaurateurs The Patio Group.
Next door in the historical naval base commissary, a full-service restaurant aptly named Mess Hall operates in-hand with the city’s first-ever food hall Liberty Public Market, where visitors can wander through the colonnades under a high ceiling lined with original hand-painted murals illustrating a timeline of U.S. naval history.
August calendar of free events at Liberty Station
July had a packed lineup of free events for the public at Liberty Station. A free salsa dancing lesson, a free concert by the SDSU wind symphony, a free concert by the Navy Destroyers band, and a free outdoor movie. All family friendly, free, and open to the public.

Friday Aug 5, 5-9 pm
“Friday Night Liberty” is the first Friday of every month. The museums and galleries are free for all, there is free live music featuring major local talent — such as award winning Alex Kova last month — and visitors can browse the vendors and the many retail spaces of the Arts District.
Sat Aug 13, from 10 am to 6 pm; Sun Aug 14, 10 am to 5 pm.
ArtWalk @ Liberty Station
In 2016, ArtWalk @ Liberty Station celebrates 11 years of bringing visual arts, music, and interactive art-making for families. ArtWalk @ Liberty Station is in Ingram Plaza in the Arts District.

Those that come early may find themselves entertained by performers from several of the music and dance groups of Liberty Station.
There are separate sections for folks on blankets and folks with chairs so that everyone has a great view of the screen. And inexpensive snacks and drinks will be available.
These museums are all free on First Friday.

Some events are not free — such as some poetry and writing workshops and August’s Brunch with the ARTS (the only fundraiser of the year for the Friends of NTC) on Sun Aug 14, from 10-11:30 am. For more information on Liberty Station events.
