City Plants New Tree Where Old One Was Cut Down Mistakenly

A couple of weeks ago, the City planted a new Chinese Flame tree at the exact location of another fully-grown Chinese Flame that was chopped down by mistake on May 3rd. This occurred on the 4800 block of Voltaire Street.

OB First Responders Appreciation BBQ – Sat., June 11th

The OB Town Council will be hosting a special event this Saturday, June 11, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, to extend a very special thank you to first responders for their service and protection. Come out to show your appreciation and support for San Diego’s public service officials including SDPD, SDFD, SD Lifeguards, and local elected officials.

SeaWorld’s ‘Grand Dame,’ Bubbles the Pilot Whale, Dies

SeaWorld’s oldest pilot whale, Bubbles, has died, according to a statement issued late Thursday. “SeaWorld San Diego is saddened to announce the passing of one of the world’s most beloved animals, Bubbles the pilot whale,” said SeaWorld Spokeswoman Kelly Terry. The short-finned pilot whale was in her early to mid-50s. In addition to being SeaWorld’s oldest pilot whale, she was oldest at any zoological park. San Diego Patch

Gunman Ransack OB Home

Two (or four – depending on the news report) gunmen forced their way into an Ocean Beach home Tuesday night, knocked down two victims and ransacked the place, San Diego police said. A 911 caller told police that robbers, dressed in black and masked with bandanas, entered the home on Saratoga Avenue near Cable Street about 10:10 p.m. Both men carried guns. They knocked two victims to the floor and ransacked the house, police said. They left heading south on Cable Street. A sheriff’s helicopter and officers with dogs surrounded the home and searched the area for the thieves, but did not find them.  Police did not say what the intruders stole.

Red Tuna Crabs Swamp Mission Beach

Thousands of red tuna crabs washed ashore Tuesday morning in Mission Beach.  Visitors in the area around the South Shores Park Boat Launch found beaches covered with the carbs. Red tuna crasbs are typically found off the coast of Baja California, however, El Nino weather patterns have pushed them north and onto Southern Californian beaches.  CBS8

Man Spots 7 Foot Snake at Sunset Cliffs

An Ocean Beach man spotted a seven-foot long snake slithering along Sunset Cliffs while walking his dog Monday. “I saw this giant snake just lying there,” said Ryan Devine, who walks his dog Dakota often at Sunset Cliffs. “But [Dakota] was just staring at it when I was kind of taking the picture.”
Devine says he’s never seen anything like it at Sunset Cliffs. “I originally thought it was going to be like a rattlesnake,” Devine said. “I mean, that’s like the first thing that came into my head.”  However, experts told 10News it is actually a gopher snake. It is not venomous, although it is aggressive. The saliva of a gopher snake can also be filthy, since it eats mice and rats. A bite can transmit rabies, salmonella poisoning and even tetanus. 10News

Airplane Noise Results in Letter to FAA by Politicos

Four local leaders are fighting for families who say their homes are under siege, because they’re under a growing number of noisy airplanes. Supervisor Greg Cox along with San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilmember Lorie Zapf and Congressman Scott Peters sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration focusing on the number of complaints their offices have received over the past eight months. The letter stating, “We believe that there are workable and relatively simple solutions to resolve the distress the residents of San Diego are experiencing, and that can be implemented with your cooperation.” Channel 10news

Beach Pedalers Join Solstice Bike Ride on June 16

Bike Coalition celebrates long days with annual kickoff to summer ride. In celebration of the longest day of the year, the San Diego Bike Coalition encourages pedalers to join a casual ride highlighting one of San Diego’s most prominent summer destinations: The beach. The family-friendly, fun ride will guide guests along the boardwalk and bayside at sunset to celebrate the simplicity of life by bike in a place as beautiful as San Diego in the summer. 6 p.m. – Riders meet at the Mission Beach rollercoaster
6:15 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. – Riders pedal from rollercoaster to Crystal Pier and back.

Pt Loma High Girls Sand Volleyball Team at Championships

Point Loma High Pointers are among the county’s most successful girls teams in sand volleyball. The Pointers, whose home court is at Ocean Beach, just completed their third season, posting a 9-2 record that took them all the way to the championship match, where they were defeated by Torrey Pines High. The Pointers finished in first place in the Western Power League of the San Diego High School Sand Volleyball Association. Mission Bay Wetlands to Draw Community Input at Two Public Meetings

ReWild Mission Bay, a project of San Diego Audubon to enhance and restore up to 170 acres of wetlands in the northeast corner of Mission Bay, will hold its second community meeting next week. Residents are also encouraged to attend a community meeting for the De Anza Revitalization Plan two days later, an effort by the City of San Diego to revitalize the De Anza area within Mission Bay.

These meetings give community members an opportunity to ask questions and provide input about the two overlapping projects. ReWild Mission Bay’s geographies, timelines, and goals co-exist with the City of San Diego’s De Anza Revitalization Plan. ReWild Mission Bay seeks public input to ensure that its final plans represent a feasible, community-supported strategy to restore the northeast corner of Mission Bay to health. It also encourages the community to be involved in other projects in this area to ensure the neighborhood voice guides key planning processes.
