Between ten and fifteen car windows were smashed along Coronado Avenue in Ocean Beach early Monday morning, April 25th.
Police are looking for suspects and the vandals are thought to have used a hammer to break the windows.
Local resident Jamie Capps told Channel10News that her husband’s car had been hit:
“There was glass everywhere, pretty much all up and down this street. When my husband was getting in the car for school, and our neighbor came out right here and said her car window was broken and she wanted to check on ours and, of course, ours was too.”
“So, I just kept walking up and down this street, and I probably saw 10 to 15 cars that were vandalized,”
“[The vandal was] Definitely not driving, because he hit a lot of cars.”
Even though Capps speculated that the vandalism happened “because it’s getting worse and worse” – code words for “homeless”, this writer can remember while growing up in Point Loma during the 1960s other incidents of similar vandalism occurring.
This type of vandalism seems to come from alienated and disaffected teens. It’s just easier to blame it – and everything else on the homeless. The homeless were the cause of the police cameras. The homeless were the reason the student population at OB Elementary dropped. The homeless are the reason the Newport merchants aren’t making enough money because they drive away the tourists and the families.

Monday morning (April 25), residents along the 4800 block of Coronado Avenue in Ocean Beach woke up to find their cars had been vandalized in what appeared to be a drive-by smashing of windows between Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Cable Street.
“So, this is what my family and many other families trying to take their children to school this morning woke up to on Coronado Avenue,” said resident Russ Johnson. “I hope the thoughtless, disrespectful fools get a visit from Karma…. Two-hundred bucks unplanned spending down the drain. Guess that’s life, but who does these types of things so close to the beautiful Pacific?”
I’m failing to see anything about the homeless in that quote. They even mention a drive-by. Last time I checked homeless don’t do drive-by incidents.
Okay, Tyler, maybe you’re right and I over-reacted. But did you watch the news video? The spouse of one of the victims who had their car window smashed said at the end, that things are getting worse, or words to that effect. Those words have been used countless times referring to the travelers and homeless in general. Who else is she referring to? Those people from north OB? The kids from Pot Loma? Crime in general – which is going down? Her tweeking neighbors? Who does she perceive is responsible for things going downhill in OB?
I’m sick of all these F’n homeless trolls screwing with our town. From now on I will make it known that these fools are not welcome. Get a job like everyone else. Quit begging for money, we ain’t gonna give it to you!
Property crime in OB is as low as its been in a long time. Almost half of what it was 10 years ago. Also the police report said it was 6 cars. But hey, don’t bore me with the facts right?

Something similar happened about a year ago when I lived on the 4900 block of Coronado – it was traced back to some punk kids fighting over a parking space and mad that some other kids had parked in a spot they would’ve liked to have used to walk down to the cove at the foot of Santa Cruz. Not sure if they ever got the assailants, though…all in all, stuff like this happens all over the place all the time – but if it scares enough people to cause property values or rents to drop so I can move back, I’m all for it!
Perhaps it will scare people to empty the excess stuff out of their garages so they can park there; or convince their landlords to provide off-street parking for their maybe-legal companion units.
And..the Native Plant Garden is getting vandalized!
I heard. But what was vandalized is not the Native garden near you or the one out along Sunset Cliffs.
The garden is located near Dog Beach, at the end of Voltaire Street behind the Ocean Villa Hotel
This same thing happened about 6 years ago when I lived on Santa Cruz, right by the cove. Assholes.
