April 10th CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN Sunday – Rally for rent control in San Diego. Foot of Newport at Veteran’s Plaza at 4 pm’ This is being organized by a group that has already gathered 3200 signatures on a Change.org petition. If you’re at all concerned about the rent increases, please attend; locals and others are invited.
April 11th Monday – Forum on Wild Parrots and Recent Killings; hosted by SoCal Parrot – at the OB Rec Center, 6 to 8 pm;
April 14th Thursday 7 p.m. Film night “This Changes Everything” A 2015 documentary by Avi Lewis and inspired by Naomi Klein’s bestseller. Throughout the film Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better. This film will leave you refreshed and inspired, reflecting on the ties between us, the kind of lives we really want, and why the climate crisis is at the center of it all. Free of charge
April 15th Friday 7:30 pm Local-Earth’s Film night ” How to Change the World” Lazy Hummingbird, 4876 Santa Monica Ave. Ocean Beach 92107, This 2015 film chronicles the gripping story of the formation of the modern environmental movement with access to dramatic footage that has not been seen for over 40 years. It tells the fascinating story of eco-hero Robert Hunter and his part in the creation of what we now know as the global organization that is Greenpeace. Alongside a group of like-minded and idealistic young friends in the 1970s, Hunter would be instrumental in altering the way we now look at the world and our place within it. Apr. 21st Thursday – The Carlson & Higgins OB Scandals – 7 pm at P.L. United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., O.B. presented by the OB Historical Society; The OBHS presents “The Carlson & Higgins O.B. Scandals” By Bruce Semelsberger. In 1887 Billy Carlson and Frank Higgins (credited as the founders of O.B.) renamed “Mussel Beds” to “Ocean Beach”. Following that they were linked to numerous scandals. To name a few: land deals, an O.B. hotel and trains. Later Carlson became San Diego’s youngest Mayor, and ended up in prison; while Higgin’s became a tragic figure. Suggested OBHS Program donation $5, but any donation is appreciated.
April 23rd Saturday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Ocean Beach Green Center’s 27th Anniversary Celebration Come help us celebrate Earth Day and 27 years of environmental, peace, and social justice activism. Music, Speakers, Refreshments, Raffle Prizes from Local Businesses. Want to help the Green Center have a successful celebration. Come to a volunteer meeting on Sunday, April 10th at 2 pm and/or April 17th at 2 pm at the Ocean Beach Green Center, 4843 B Voltaire St. We need help with food, music, raffle prizes and any other ideas to help the Green Center carry on. April 30th Saturday “Ocean Beach Hippies” – a Discussion, 2 – 3pm; Local political muckraker and gadfly Frank Gormlie talks about hippie life in Ocean Beach through the years. It’s free so come join the fun at the Ocean Beach Library, 4801 Santa Monica.

State budgets for education have steadily decreased while funds for prisons increase. We are incarcerating minorities at an alarming rate, often for nonviolent offenses. April 17th Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m EarthDay at Balboa Park EarthFair is the largest free annual environmental fair in the world. This will be the 27th annual event that each year draws around 60,000 visitors. Produced by 400 volunteers it will feature more than 300 exhibitors, special theme areas, a Food Pavilion, a special Children’s Activity Area, four entertainment venues, the Children’s Earth Parade, the eARTh Gallery arts and crafts show, and the Cleaner Car Concourse.

April 24th – Sunday the Maritime Museum will open its doors for free to the public to celebrate the second annual Earth Day on the Bay. This event is sponsored by the Port of San Diego to bring awareness to preserving our oceans and marine life. Guests are welcome to visit booths from over 20 different organizations including Birch Aquarium, Ocean Connectors, The Living Coast, Wild Coast, Port of San Diego, etc. Guests will be allowed to visit with marine life up close and meet some local organizations working hard to preserve our oceans. 1492 N. Missing on here is a rally this Sunday, April 10 for rent control in SD. It’s at the foot of Newport at Veteran’s Plaza organized a group that has already gathered 3200 signatures on a Change.org petition. Rally is at 4 pm.
If you’re at all concerned about the rent increases you, or others have been receiving, I suggest you attend. It’s not just OB, it’s all over SD and non locals are welcome of course too.
