Somebody is shooting and killing parrots with pellet guns in the OB and Point Loma area. Three parrots have been killed in the last 6 or 7 days.
Five parrots have been killed this year.
Two were found on Monday, Feb. 22nd in the area of Talbot Street and Gage Drive. Number three was found dead near the Mariners Cove Apartments on Point Loma, with an X-ray showing a small pellet in it.
The parrot rescue group, SoCal Parrot, is very concerned. Brook Durham, founder of the group, told the media:
“We do want the community to feel that it’s not right to harm innocent animals. I think most people in Southern California would agree that this is not okay. And so we definitely need the community to push the culture of, you know, not harming innocent animals.”
“You stay up with them all night, trying to keep them alive, and there is just nothing you can do.”
Durham also added that it’s beginning of “baby season” so a lot of the parrots probably have nests set up for their eggs. So if a parent is killed, the babies will die too.
Even though the different species of parrots we see in our skies and trees are not native to Southern California, they have apparently found a home and thrive on plants and fruits around San Diego.
Anyone caught shooting the birds will be liable for felony animal cruelty charges.

Why would you shoot and kill such a beautiful bird. A bird that was almost extinct and is trying to come back.
Do you not know where you live? You live in paradise, and these parrots belong in paradise. These birds do nothing to you!
Would you please kill the crows (which are way over populated) that harass: Parrots, Hawks and other Native animals.

No one has a right to harm an innocent animal. Humans are the ultimate blame for their presence here. Much of their native habitats have been destroyed. The relative few survivors were under our captivity to be released again in this area. Granted, they are not native here, but neither are we. Our artificial environment with exotic plants creates an ideal environment for them. Because of this, they are not a threat to our natural ecosystems. Like us, they’re merely trying to survive. I hope this sadist will be caught.
I love the parrots, and feel lucky to live with such exotic birds, even if their noisy conversations occasionally get a bit screechy.
Here’s hoping whoever is getting their kicks in this terrible way ceases and desists right about now.
