Around 5pm Wednesday, Feb. 24th, a section of Sunset Cliffs collapsed. No one was hurt – as the collapse had been anticipated and an area had been cordoned off.
The falling dirt came at 1303 Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials, near the first parking lot south of Adair Street.
The yellow tape had been up for weeks, as a geologist had visited the site a month ago to evaluate it. SDSD geology professor Pat Abbott had recommended to city officials that they cordon the area off as it appeared to be drastically unstable.
Abbott had told the media that a large crack that had formed in the rock was due to gravity, the cliff’s steepness, tides, and that El Nino rains was the final element that caused the flash erosion.
Here is our report from January 19, 2016.
