Slightly Stoopid Makes the Rounds in Ocean Beach

This week has been a whirlwind neighborhood tour for Ocean Beach’s favorite band, Slightly Stoopid.

The local boys played an invitation-only show at OB Noodle House Bar 1502 on Wednesday night, then made an appearance this morning with 91X at Nico’s Restaurant.

“You can’t beat being home,” said Kyle McDonald, one of the band’s founders. “It suits us nice to live in the place you want to be.”

The show at Noodle House celebrated the restaurant’s first anniversary. It also helped raise funds for the OB Fireworks Show on Fourth of July. Despite a packed house that overflowed onto the Niagara Avenue sidewalk, it was an intimate look at the band that has made OB proud for two decades.

“It was such a good vibe,” said fellow co-founder and OB resident Miles Doughty. “Anytime you play something like that, it’s fun. Kind of like a back yard party.”

Noodle House owner Steve Yeng said the concert raised $2,300 for this year’s fireworks show.

“Those guys are great,” Yeng said. “They’re all super generous. Always down to play for a cause.”

They took the stage for more than two hours, playing crowd favorites mixed with songs from their new album, which comes out next month.

“Anything you can do in the community and help out feels great,” Doughty said. “It was an honor for us.”

The boys braved the rain this morning to hang at Nico’s for 91X’s Best Breakfast Burrito Tour. They talked to DJ Matt Stone and signed autographs for “Stoopid Heads” who stopped by to show their love.

Nico’s owner Jose Carreon said he’s known the band for a long time and jumped at the chance to have them come hang with the radio station.

“Miles has been coming in here for years,” Carreon said, the pride in his voice showing through. “I’m glad they could stop by. It’s nice. It’s just, really nice.”

“Gotta pay our respects to the Nic’s!” McDonald said.

It’s back on the road for the boys this weekend, as they head to San Bernadino to headline the Blaze N Glory festival on Saturday.

Their album, “Meanwhile … Back at the Lab” drops June 30, followed by a nationwide tour. They’ll be back in the area in September to play the Kaaboo Festival in Del Mar.

“We just feel so lucky to do what we do,” McDonald said. “We’ve been so many places, but there’s nowhere we’d rather be.”
