Plumber Ignites Fire in Cape May Apartment
A plumber working in an Ocean Beach apartment accidentally ignited a fire in one wall Thursday [April 30], San Diego fire officials said. The fire was reported about 1:50 p.m. at a two-story building on Cape May Avenue at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Crews had to tear out a section of wall in one apartment to get to the fire, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said. The flames were extinguished within about 15 minutes. Damage was estimated at $5,000 to $10,000. The Red Cross was called to assist two displaced tenants. U-T San Diego 4/30/15
Police Fatally Shoot Man With Knife in Midway Area
San Diego Police officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man early Thursday in the Midway District. An employee of the Highlight Book Store called for help after the armed man threatened people in the 3200 block of Hancock Street near West Camino del Rio around 12:05 a.m., San Diego Police Lt. Mike Hastings said. The gunman man then entered the business and threatened the worker before heading back outside. An arriving officer spotted the suspect behind the building. The knife- wielding man charged at the officer prompting him to open fire, according to Hastings. The suspect was taken to a hospital but later died, Hastings said. His name was withheld pending family notification. Hastings said the officer who shot the suspect had been with the San Diego Police Department for 27 years. Times of San Diego.
Innocence Project Stages Another Walk to OB from Downtown
About 30 people walked from California Western School of Law, home of the California Innocence Project, to Ocean Beach Monday, April 27, to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the start of the Innocence March, an effort to raise awareness about a dozen men and women serving time on offenses their attorneys say they did not commit. Parents of OB 5-Year-Old Battling Leukemia Needs Help
Family and friends of Roc Wooldridge, a lively, energetic, and hilarious 5-year-old Ocean Beach boy diagnosed with leukemia, are hosting fundraisers to help defray his medical expenses. Roc is the best at quoting movies as well as being the biggest Marvel Comics fan ever. He was recently diagnosed with leukemia and began chemotherapy. San Diego Community News Group

Teen Pulls Elderly Couple From Mini-Van After Crash in Loma Portal
A San Diego teenager was one of the first to jump in and help a couple trapped and in shock following in a hit-and-run crash in Loma Portal Saturday [April 25]. “It hurt my heart because they were helpless and didn’t know what to do,” said 18-year-old Nida Wongsri. Wongsri told NBC 7 she first spotted the couple’s minivan near the intersection of Chatsworth Boulevard and Elliot Street Saturday night, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.
Updated Coroner’s Report on Mike Hardin
A coroner’s report obtained by NBC 7 Investigates Monday reveals new details about the sudden death of Hodad’s burger joint owner Mike “Bossman” Hardin. The beloved Ocean Beach resident died from a heart attack at a central California hotel on Feb. 5, brought on by an enlarged heart and severe coronary artery disease, according to a report from the Madera County Coroner’s Office. The forensic pathologist who examined Hardin found one of his arteries was filled at least 75 percent with plaque. He also discovered evidence of a previous heart attack, as well as lung and liver problems. According to a Madera County Sheriff’s Office report, the front desk clerk at the Chowchilla Holiday Inn told investigators Hardin was supposed to check out at 11 a.m. on Feb. 5, but by 1:30 p.m., no one had heard from him.
Female Brewmaster in LA Got Her Training at OB’s Pizza Port
Devon Randall, former head brewer at Pizza Port in Solana Beach, is originally from L.A. She grew up on the Westside … and she moved to San Diego five years ago to get brewing experience and worked at SoCal powerhouse Lost Abbey (helping them run their extensive barrel program) and Pizza Port Ocean Beach (where she trained under local legend Yiga Miyashiro) before taking the job at the Solana Beach location in early 2013. Pedestrian Killed Near SeaWorld
A 51-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car on SeaWorld Drive Tuesday night [April 28] prompting police to shut down traffic in the busy area. Police said the woman was walking southbound on SeaWorld Drive along the crosswalk around 8 p.m. when a 32-year-old man driving a Honda hit her. MSNBC

Point Loma Husband Sentenced to 11 Years for Wife’s Death
It’s possible – probable even – that no one will ever know how Fumiko Ogawa Simoneau died. Except for her husband, … who admitted in an El Cajon courtroom that he killed his wife eight years ago … A judge sentenced Anthony Edward Simoneau to the 11-year … The wife’s skeletal remains were found at a campground in the Anza Borrego Desert. The San Diego County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation presents the chapter’s 15th Annual Art Gala on Friday, May 8, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Paradise Point Resort and Spa, 1404 Vacation Road San Diego, CA 92109. From featured artwork to interactive event experiences, guests at the Gala will be treated to an evening of art, entertainment and ocean advocacy. We have it on good authority (statcounter) that nearly a 100 readers have gone to this article, and even though gormlie explicitly asked readers to hit the “like” button to show some good vibes for the work that goes into this weekly column – despite a typo here and there – only one reader has done so. I hear ya, editordude, I just forget to hit it. But you’re right – as I do write an occasional piece for this here rag – we writers need some props now and then and an ol’ pat on the back now and then.
As far as I know the current practice is if you come across victims of crash you are not to move them unless they are under direct threat of fire or drowning. Let the paramedics extricate them, moving them could cause further injury and even get you sued.
Two comments. First, the seal lion did not attack the guy it went after the fish the guy was holding and got him at the same time. Just like giving a hungry dog a bone, sometimes the dog gets the bone and some fingers. It is misleading to tell people they need to fear that these animals will attack people unprovoked. This was a freak accident, nothing more.
Second, how does a guy only get 11 years in prison for an admitted murder? With time off for good behavior too? That judgement was a travesty.
