The construction that has fascinated and puzzled passers-by to St. Peter’s by the Sea Lutheran Church has come to an end. The church located on the edge of OB and Point Loma is inviting the community to see the spectacular update at an Open House on Saturday, April 18, 1:00 – 4:00 PM.
For everyone who watches the construction going on and never sees the final product, this is chance to view a meaningful change to a site that effectively combines old and new.
Docents will be available to explain the changes as you tour the facility; there will be crafts and activities for the children, and the” before and after” pictures are displayed for all to see.
This is not a church service or a dedication with speeches; it is planned as an introduction to the new church building for the neighborhood and to explain the plans for the building to the community.
The building is fully ADA compliant, complete with “green” features – including the native plant landscaping -, and the effective combination of modern facilities with the traditional sanctuary.
When asked about the process, Pastor Karen Marohn, explained with a smile, “St. Peters follows the rules.”
This included three full inspections. If you decide to visit, here are some things to look for:
- Solar tubes provide lighting in the bathrooms
- Three full bathrooms, including a baby changer in the men’s bathroom
- Water conservation controls on all faucets
- Separate heat thermostats for different rooms
Watkins-Landmark Construction was the contractor, a responsibility that included accommodating Sunday Church services throughout the construction process. The San Diego architectural firm, “domusstudio architecture” worked with a committee to satisfy an astonishing variety of needs with style and practicality.
When asking if anything was left to be done, Pastor Marohn pointed out that the basketball backboards were still being installed. Perhaps they, too, will be ready by the Open House.
With the new kitchen there is a sparkling new coffee pot. And what is an open house without punch and cookies? Plan to see your friends and neighbors there, enjoy the thriving native plant garden, and stifle any envy when you see what that kitchen has to offer. The theme, “All are welcome” provides an opportunity to see this project for yourself.
