The Ocean Beach Entryway Park and Robb Field Are Finally Connected

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFinally, the parks are connected!

The OB Entryway Park and Robb Field finally have no fence between them. The last obstacle – an orange plastic web fencing that had been installed where a chain-link fence once stood – has fallen apart and pedestrians and bicyclists are now moving through one park to the other.

On Wednesday, March 18, the OB Rag checked and could see that the web fencing had mostly fallen off the short metal posts. Bicycle tracks and foot prints could clearly be seen in the dirt leading from the OB Entryway into the grass in Robb Field.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe OB Entryway Park / Project – since its recent opening by the City – has received criticism from the community as the much-ballyhooed ADA-approved sidewalk trail within the OB Entryway did not connect with Robb Field.  This obvious “oversight” in the construction of the trail went against the original design, as the original design did indeed have one of the small park’s trails connect with Robb Field.

Yet, once the final construction was completed, members of the community were surprised that for some reason, the two parks – even though side by side – did not have a trail or pathway between them.

Somewhere, along the line, the design was changed – and this is still a mystery to observers of the project, which has been beset with multiple problems, delays ever since its undertaking years ago.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASome within the community have washed their hands of the project. Recently, the OB CDC – which had attempted to shepard the project through its phases, closed its accounts on the project.

Plus the City left in the short but very steep asphalt trail that runs from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard down into Robb Field. The pathway is dangerous for anyone with disabilities, seniors, parents with strollers – but it is highly used because it’s the only entry way into Robb Field from that portion of Ocean Beach.

We’re certain this is not the last we have heard about all of this. But now, at least, we can get to Robb Field from the Entryway Park and vice-versa. It was meant to be.

I, Darrell Johnson (DJ), agree with the community’s desire to have the path connect to Robb Field completely into the old bike path in the grass. I also feel like the bike path should be widened for skateboarders, strollers, and bikes.
If the community likes my idea let me know at dj69dj69dj@gmail.com and we can talk more.
