CJ Catering Moving Into Former Voltaire Street Bakery
Some good news for those with a hefty sweet tooth, C J Catering – which has been located on the other side of Catalina Avenue on Voltaire – is moving into the empty bakery storefront a few blocks down on Voltaire, on the 4800 block. Some know it as the former Stephanie’s – a vegan bakery. CJ Catering specializes in pies and cookies, and we assume that they’ll tweak their name as this a more of a retail venture for the longtime Peninsula business.
Some obvious improvements have been made in the new storefront, a new floor in the front room, a wall taken down. Raoul told me they expect to open in a couple of weeks. CJ Catering over the years has been very generous to the community and we wish them good luck and haste (obviously some of us have a sweet tooth).
CVS Opens in Former Apple Tree
It’s finally happened, CVS has opened its doors. Everything looks new; they retained the beautiful curved crossbeams and wood on the high ceilings; installed new landscaping in the front (it only has 1 door – in contrast to the old Apple Tree/ Safeway building which had 2) poured a new seal on the parking lot, and did some remodeling in the back.
We hope CVS also keeps its pledges that it made to the OB Town Council and community through their “Community Agreement” – one of which was to hire local people as staff.

In the Meantime New Apple Tree on Newport Makes Progress
Just as the new CVS opened in its former location, the Apple Tree market that is opening on Newport Avenue appears to have made some progress
Saratoga Condos to Open February 1
The long-awaited 3-story condos at Abbott and Saratoga are about to formally open. February 1st is the move-in date for those who have already leased the 10-or-so units. We understand management is keeping one unit.
When the project was approved by the city, the city traded a closed-alley for a walk-way on the south side of the project, and now that walk-way is also finished. Locals and visitors should realize that the walkway is publicly accessible and leads to a public park, the grassy Saratoga greens.
New Poles at Site of Future Sunset Plaza
We’ve noticed that a couple of new, tall and expensive electical poles have been installed at the site of the future Sunset Plaza at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Blvd and Voltaire Street.
Not much else seems to be going on in the large dirt lot, owned by World Oil. (If you’d like to see more about the history of this site, do a word search for “Sunset Plaza” or “World Oil”)
Fourth 3-Story Behemoth on West Pt Loma Makes a Fine Blocked View
The fourth three-story single family house on West Pt Loma to have been granted variances has reared its head, as the wood frame is now up. Taken together the 4 are quite a view and provide us with the hefty beginnings of a wall of gentrification.

My friend Carol, who lives in O B, is now working in the new CVS here….she walks to work!
As for the behemoth, what a terrible shame; as terrible as all the tear-downs happening in all the 4900, ocean blocks…..little cottages being replaced by as much as can be squeezed into the lots.
And the Saratoga condos…..ugho.
Where are the imaginative architects/designers and why are they not putting up green, spare, modern, wonderful buildings in our wonderful town?
A human body is worth about $4,50 when it’s broken down to its mineral value I’m told. More and more, it’s all about the bottom line.
Regarding development… If you’ve spent any time in California, this shouldn’t be surprising at all.
I understand why people don’t want things to change, but I don’t understand why they are surprised when they do. Coastal real estate is reserved for hard working Americans that have achieved their version of the dream. Don’t H8 the playa, hate the game.
Just because you were there first doesn’t mean you are entitled to anything… right? Money talks… get used to it.
