New Year’s Clean-Up for Change to Focus on Preventing Litter Reaching the Ocean
There is a concerted effort this weekend to do a New Year’s clean-up of the Ocean Beach community, Saturday, January 10th. And the focus this time – is not on the beach – but in the areas of OB where the litter leads to the ocean.
The OB Cleaner Streets Initiative (CSI-OB) is teaming up with CleanUps for Change Saturday in Ocean Beach for a community litter cleanup. They will focus on the streets, alleys, and sidewalks that lead to the ocean in addition to cleaning litter from our parks and beaches.
Volunteers are asked to meet at Pizza Port OB (1956 Bacon St., OB, SD, 92107) from 9am until Noon. They will be asked to focus on a specific segment of Ocean Beach.
As with all litter cleanups, participants are encouraged to bring gloves in addition to wearing shoes, pants and long sleeves. Bring a bucket if you can. There will be plenty of extra gloves and supplies for volunteers. Plan to stick around for pizza and volunteer appreciation specials at Pizza Port.
The ocean is turning into a plastic soup and much of the plastic at sea starts as litter on land. Litter can be intentional or by accident, but either way we need to find solutions to fight this urban blight that impacts our environment. In addition to participating in community cleanups, it is critical to find solutions to prevent litter.

This is a great opportunity to give a lil something back to the neighborhood we love. Thanks to Cleanups for Change for getting the ball rolling on this. We hope to see lots of Obecians at Pizza Port on Saturday morning.

I can’t wait for this trash pickup this Saturday! And how wonderful to have a sponsor and headquarters such as Pizza Port! I like how we are going to be focusing on the streets, alleys and sidewalks of our community. Several organizations already maintain the beaches, so it’s nice to focus our efforts on the streets of OB. We have a serious littering problem that can only be tackled by motivated, concerned citizens! Let’s get as many people involved as we can, helping CleanUps for Change and Cleaner Streets Initiative-OB have a successful trash pickup! Let’s demonstrate just how much we will no longer tolerate trash in our community!

Or if you’re looking for a beach to clean, join our Dog Beach Cleanup this Saturday from 9 to 11 am. It’s one of our every 2nd Saturday every month cleanups. Sorry, no beer or pizza though. An important cleanup nonetheless.
Hey folks! This is tomorrow! There’s been a bit of depressing news in our little hamlet lately. This is a great opportunity to get together as a community and show the overwhelmingly positive side of Ocean Beach! Huge thanks to all involved in putting this event together. Aloha!
Awesome. I implore volunteers to come help with the really bad areas because last time it was just me and one other person cleaning ground zero of the litter (lot behind Winston’s, James Gang). Santa Monica between Bacon and Cable is often overlooked as well for how bad it gets. I’ll be right around there!
This is gonna be a great way to start the new year – STAYIN’ CLEEN in 2015! Gotta love businesses like OB Rag and Pizza Port that help make a better community, well, better!

I cleaned up glass along Bacon Street between Newport & Santa Monica immediately after the flooding subsided around 4:00pm Tuesday.. I cleared the drain grate at Newport.
There were palm fronds obstructing the flow of water.
There were bottles washed under car tires.
Does anyone know where to get sandbags? The firehouses at Voltaire and Catalina were out of free bags. Lowes in Mission Valley was out of sand & sandbags.
Winston’s on Bacon needs sandbags to prevent a repeat of water coming up and in to the bar.

Groucho, we just came from lifeguard station. They’re handing out free sandbags ya gotta fill yourself. Over 25 peeps out there shoveling.8
