OB Holiday Parade

The OB Holiday Parade down Newport Ave. – unknown year – but before the OB Hostel was painted its “hippie-esque floral design”. Wonderful photo by Joe Ewing – thanks Joe! Great shot, very iconic.

OBceans of every stripe and kind are being urged by local neighborhood planners and organizers to join the OB Community Plan contingent in the Holiday Parade this Saturday, December 6th.

The OB Community Plan has been awarded the honorary title of the Grand Marshall of the Parade by the Town Council. The contingent will be at the very front of the parade and will be lining up next to Chase Bank on Newport Ave at 5pm on Saturday.

Some other community groups – such as the Friends of the OB Library – in demonstration of solidarity with the OB Community Plan,  have folded their own parade entry into the Community Plan’s entry – and will be having their members walk in the front of the parade.  It’s also noted that if someone joins the Plan contingent at the beginning, there’s plenty of time to return to their own float or entry further up in the parade.  The parade begins at 5:05 pm.

Folks who join the contingent are also being asked to wear their blue T-shirt with the “keep OBcean attitude” slogan on it – or actually any blue T-shirt.  Plus people are asked to carry a sign with the one word about OB that impresses them the most.  Examples are “Dog-Friendly”, “Feisty” (please use a family-friendly word as this is a family event).

If you don’t have a sign, you can drop by the OB Dog Beach Dog Wash at 4933 Voltaire any time this week, from 7 am to 5pm to make the sign. Sign making materials will be on hand. Just ask a staff person at the dog wash to let you in next door.

Mindy and Jane, the owners of Dog Beach Dog Wash – who just washed their half millionth dog last week – are also inviting people who will be part of the contingent to a ‘night-before’ party at their storefront; it starts at 7pm Friday, Dec. 5th, beer and wine will be served, plus you can BYOB.

Join the OB Community Plan contingent – keep the Plan alive – the update process has not entirely been completed, as the Plan Update still must go before and be approved by the California Coastal Commission, which is expected to happen sometime in January 2015.
