Is it true that the OB Rag is not the only media that gets confused at times about which Ocean Beach is being referred to in the news? Check out this photo and story from CBS San Fran Bay Area. In a Dec. 22 article about weather hazards at beaches in northern California, about sneaker waves and 40 mph winds, they appear to have used a photo of the OB Pier. Are we right? What do you think?
Hit and Run Victim Talks
Katie Conner, the young OBcean woman who was the victim of a hit-and-run driver in OB in October while riding her bike late at night after work, spoke to a local TV station on the crash that changed her life. They reported that “she takes nothing for granted like cooking or exercising this holiday season” since she was hospitalized at UC San Diego Medical Center after the crash. “It feels really good to kind of get back to how everything was before the accident,” Conner told 10News.
OB Surfers Part of Study of Health Problems from Post-Storm Polluted Ocean
Storms turn ocean into Mother Nature’s toilet, and pose health hazards for surfers, swimmers and others who venture into the Pacific after turbulent weather. Now since Dec. 1st, OB surfers are taking part in a study going on to evaluate medical and health problems that arise after they surf due to possible pollution from storms. Researchers ask surfers who paddle out at Ocean Beach and Tourmaline to track their health after they surf for a four-week period. Surfers log in online or use a phone application to take the surveys. The study wraps up March 31. OC Register
Stolen Christmas Presents Pose Possible Problem for OB Post Office Branch
An OB couple, David and Heather Price, are claiming that presents sent to family in Texas were tampered with possibly by a postal clerk or someone “inside” the OB PO. David, a San Diego-based Navy sailor, and his wife “sent a cardboard box containing approximately $90 worth of toys and gift cards through the Ocean Beach post office on Dec. 13. When their family in San Antonio, Texas received the package six days later, it was obvious that someone had replaced the box with another,” reports NBCSanDiego and the gifts were missing.
Cancer-Survivor Grandmother to Begin 4th Leg Run Around Country Which Begin in OB in 2010
Helen Neville is a cancer-survivor, a grandmother and a runner. Her run around the perimeter of the country began in May 2010 going 2,520 miles from Ocean Beach, Calif., to Atlantic Beach, Fla., in 93 days. She was then 49. In 2011, she was diagnosed with T-Cell lymphoma. In May 2013, she left Vancouver, B.C., and 45 days and 1,500 miles later finished at the International Crossing past San Diego at Tijuana, Mexico. Neville is now beginning the fourth and final leg of her journey.
2nd Fatal Accident in Midway District Near I-8 Freeway Shows Dangers of Stretch
A man was fatally injured on Christmas trying to dodge traffic on Camino Del Rio West, just before the Interstate 8 eastbound ramp in the Midway District. Police reported that about 5:40 p.m., the man was crossing Camino del Rio W. near Moore Street when a vehicle heading his way slowed down to let him run across the street. However, another car sped around the first and hit the pedestrian. The man died from his injuries. It is the second, similar accident in the area this year. In October, the driver of a dump truck hit a pedestrian in the middle of the I-8 offramp, leading onto the same road. That man later died. We also recall a bicyclist who was injured by a vehicle also in that general area. NBCSanDiego highlights the dangers of that stretch of road that often people try to run across or bike through.
Pt Loma Nazarene Anthropology Prof Part of Study of Gangs and Sex-Trafficking
A local study is being conducted by Jamie Gates, a professor of cultural anthropology at Point Loma Nazarene University, and Ami Carpenter, a professor with the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego. The growing connection between gangs and sex trafficking in San Diego is being studied by two local university professors who are researching the issue with a $470,000 federal grant.The U-T San Diego reports:
Earlier this year, San Diego was singled out in a report by the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Institute that discussed the association between gangs and sex trafficking. The report looked at the underground sex economy in eight major U.S. cities and said San Diego had uncovered the most amount of gang involvement in the world of underground commercial sex.
Police Renew Call for Info on Missing Pt Loma Mom
San Diego police have renewed their call for information that could help find a 31-year-old mother of two who vanished from her Point Loma home more than two months ago. Elizabeth Michelle Sullivan went missing Oct. 13, and last made contact that day via text message, according to San Diego police. Her phone has since been shut off. Sullivan is black, 5 feet 3 inches tall and 130 pounds with dark hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on her whereabouts was asked to call police at (619) 531-2277 or (619) 531-2327.
“Backdoor Bandit” Who Robbed 13 Businesses Including Roberto’s in Ocean Beach Sentenced
Just before Christmas, one of four people who plead guilt to holding up 13 businesses, was sentenced to 14 years and some months. Ryan Patrick Churchill, 23, was one of the quartet who did the robberies including Roberto’s Taco Shop on Voltaire Street in Ocean Beach. La Jolla Patch “Backdoor Bandits” earned that nickname because they entered San Diego businesses — taco shops and other local eateries in Clairemont, La Jolla and Ocean Beach — through an unlocked rear or service door.
Subway Shop in Midway Robbed
Also, just before Christmas, a pair of similar robberies took place an hour apart, including the armed thefts at the Midway District. The other was at Sands of La Jolla Hotel – reported at 8:50 p.m. and the second, at the Subwayshop at 3445 Midway Drive, was reported at 10:10 p.m. 10News
Drop Off Xmas Trees Till Jan 23 in OB and Mission Bay
You can drop off your Christmas trees during the day at any of the 16 drop-off locations through Jan. 23. All trees must be cleaned of tree stands, lights, tinsel, ornaments and other nonrecyclable materials. Green and flocked trees (with fake snow) are accepted; artificial trees are not. So at Ocean Beach: Robb Athletic Field Recreation Center, 2525 Bacon St, and Mission Bay: SeaWorld Drive at Pacific Highway.

The more sunlight that can be shown on San Diego’s heavy involvement in sex trafficking the better. Our fair city has become one of the meccas in the type of modern slavery.
Hey, why couldn’t the Christmas package sent thru the OB Post Office been “tampered” with at the other end, in Texas?
I spent half a year a long time ago working in the Postal Services’s new bulk mail facility in Richmond, CA, one of about 20 they built in the early seventies. I worked three weeks during the Christmas season and the number of packages was staggering. The number of packages that were damaged was equally staggering. They had a whole area devoted to “restoring” packages with shifts of several people working around the clock. There were bins of damaged packages, bins of packages but no contents, bins of contents and no packages, bins of packages where the addresses were ripped off. Usually, the damaged goods went with some kind of note from the Post Office but not always. Whatever happened to that package could have happened anywhere between here and Texas, it is not fair to the OB Post Office to assume something happened there.
