I think round-abouts are a pain in the rear and would be confusing to many.
Smarter would have been to have an entrance/exit to Robb Field elsewhere so all those sports visitors wouldn’t have to drive down WPL creating headaches for us locs. Of course that would make too much sense. How about making the intersection a 4 way stop as opposed to the 5 way it is now and requiring any of the large sporting events to hire people to control traffic as they did a few times last Summer?
A roundabout would work really well there…
…so would people using their turn signals
Please make sure to get the signage right because non-OBcians coming to play soccer at Robb Field won’t intuitively know how to use it. Americans simply aren’t use to them.
Due to the ubiquitous cell phone people now experience a dearth of knowledge regarding clockwise & counter-clockwise.
Perhaps a round-about is a good idea; for the center we could design & build a memorial to all those who have died of prostate cancer. How about two spheres & an obelisk?
Create an entrance to Robb Field at the three way intersection already controlled by a traffic signal at the end of Hwy 8. Cal Trans money perhaps ?
Use city funds for a new lifeguard station in O.B.
Roundabouts are used for two basic reasons. One is to slow traffic and the other is to avoid the cost of a signal. I drove through many of these in New Zealand and did not much care for them. But, some of my problem was having to drive on the left side of the road, which made the experience even harder. We don’t need to slow traffic and a signal isn’t necessary. The four way stop has worked fine for me for many years, I don’t see the point.
One big problem with roundabouts is that it leaves when to enter traffic to the discretion of the driver. Some drivers will have no patience and will not wait to enter when they should. On a busy day with traffic backed up on West Pt. Loma and from Robb Field, I predict chaos with a roundabout. The suggestions for a new entrance to Robb field are the best solution by far.
Agree. We need to modify this intersection: sidewalks, Ada curbcuts, pedestrian control crosswalks, but we don’t need to spend taxpayers money on something that will not do a thing to help with the congestion on this street.
Congestion is a direct result of terrible traffic light timing at SSC. A roundabout will speed people up to go nowhere.
Either Bacon or Cable (but please not both) are great candidates for a circle.
And if OBcians and Americans really are too dumb to use them, then they’re also too dumb to drive. Or be allowed to vote.
Would love to see roundabouts in OB (and throughout the city). They are more efficient than 4 way stops and are much, much safer in regard to the most serious type of collisions – head ons and T bones from left turns.

Roundabouts have incredible benefits:
– they increase the flow of traffic substantially
– they reduce accidents dramatically
– they improve gas mileage
– they limit pollution
– they are least costly to maintain
– no more left turns
– basically they are a no-brainer
