A severe head injury to a bicyclist occurred early Sunday in Ocean Beach in a hit-and-run. A woman bicyclist was hit by a white pick-up truck at the intersection of West Point Loma Avenue and Sunset Cliffs.
The pickup truck had a camper shell and was northbound. She was eastbound – they crashed around 1:20 a.m. – and the impact knocked the woman to the ground – where she suffered her serious head injury, and was taken to a hospital.
The truck didn’t stop and kept going – towards Mission Bay Park.
The victim remains unidentified.

Odd question. Since there was no mention of anyone running a red light what prompted you to ask “who”? Auto/bike accident don’t only happened because one of the parties ran the red light. In this particular case just for the sake of argument, even if the rider ran a red light and that resulted in her getting hit, the driver still committed a crime by not stopping. That is a very different situation than what happened last week. Apples and oranges.
Why is it an odd question? Given the stated direction of travel of the vehicles it is obvious that SOMEONE FAILED TO YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY and entered the intersection on a red light.
I am not what I would call a “serious” bicyclist. However I don’t get on my Klein road bike without a helmet and at night, lights front and rear.
I never run red lights (unless very late and they dont trip for a bike)
I never ride on sidewalks or against traffic.
I have found the greatest risk to my safety is not from motorists but from other bicyclists, the kind OB seems to have in great numbers.
I hate to generalize but you know the ones. Beach cruisers with the chain lubricated religiously every five years. Usually inebriated and riding againsg traffic because THEY “feel safer” if they can see the car before it hits them. They wouldnt wear a helmet on a bet never have lights at night and roll through every stop sign without bothering to slow down. Even when a car is sitting there already. I see them every day and they are the most voiciferous about cars being a danger to them.
Was this person a rider like that?
Thats why I asked the question. When I see an answer we can take the discussion further.

I’m am not an advocate for anyone ever hitting anything and not stopping but I wonder what the bicyclist was doing riding at 1:30 AM (really dark and the driving public is different at that hour) and did she have the required lights, both front and back, and did she wear a helmet for protection, light colored clothing with some reflective material, etc. The truck driver was probably at fault due to the 3 foot distance allowance law now but the (every) bicyclist must always protect themselves in every way when riding on the street. I hope the driver is found and brought to justice as he/she was probably over the .08 limit at that hour also and hit and run is a felony. We all must redoubled our awareness of the fact that bicyclists on the road are vulnerable and space and speed must be regulated by every driver accordingly and bicyclists must take all steps necessary to make themselves both visible and as safe as possible in case of an accident like this one.
You make some very good points Dana Levy. I really wish her all the best on her speedy & full recovery. It’s very unfortunate that the driver never stopped during that terrible moment. I hope the driver gets caught eventually. I can’t imagine what her medical bills will be when all said is done.
Well thats the funny thing about hit and run laws and liability.
Hit and run penalties were originally conceived so when an incident happened no one would be left for dead, injured in desolate areas with no one to give them first aid.
Nowadays it seems more tuned toward liabilities and paying for damages. Thats all fine and good but what if you are driving after drinking just one beer, and a bicyclist with no lights, inebriated, comes out of nowhere crossing a red light and you hit them? And you see there are people there to call 911?
If thats what happened here are we going to lynch this guy for not hanging around to collect a DUI, have his insurance company cancel him and lose any other assets like a business or home?

Biker was sober. Riding home from work with lights. Please stop the excuses for hit and run. Its never acceptable.

Without the facts in this case, you are making excuses for a felony hit and run driver?? There is a woman with severe head injuries and you think its funny the hit and run driver may have been drunk and evaded jail, fines, liability.

My response: If the driver would have stopped he may have avoided much of what you say COULD happen to him mosy which is unlikely, especially if he had your “1 beer” .
Instead when the driver is caught the legal consequences could exceed everything you stated. Felony hit and run is a serious crime and judges do not like to see these cases especially when the victim is a young person with lifelong injuries likely.

No mention of the victim’s welfare (severe head trauma , part of skull removed) only the felony hit and run driver’s financial well being. After you determined with out any proof that she was at fault, drunk, and running red lights. So whatever, little fellow.
The argument presented was that there are numerous scofflaw bicyclists riding around OB at night with no lights, inebriated, running stop signs and red lights at will. Is it fair if one were to cross your path with a collision entirely their fault, you get a DUI and bear all the cost of their injuries?
That is the argument presented and the hit and run notwithstanding I stand behind it.
We dont have a lot of facts here. One we do know is this: At 1 am that signal defaults to a constant green north south giving the pickup driver the right of way. It doesnt trip for an east west cyclist at all unless you ride up the curb, stop and push the button.
Did she do that and then launch in front of a truck careening at her?
Or did the truck have the green light that is the normal case unless a bicycle stops and pushes the button and waits for the green?

The argument presented here was soulless… in light of the tragedy that occurred early Sunday that left a young woman fighting for her life in intensive care with part of her skull removed as a result of an accident that involved a felony hit and run driver.
So you condone drunk driving in addition to supporting felony hit & run drivers?
The driver of an automobile is responsible for stopping after hitting a pedestrian, another car, a tree, a bicyclist or even a fire hydrant or center divider. That is the law. Period and for good reason. Your position is indefensible which is why you have to keep coming back to re-re-explain your idiotic posts.
Nothing in what you said here has any merit at all and you paint a ugly self portrait in the process.
This all feels like a grossly inappropriate argument to be having on an article about a young lady who has been injured. If I’m her family reading this, I would be disturbed. Here’s to just wishing her a full recovery and speedy reunion with her family.
