Have you checked your calendar for this weekend recently? Yeah, it’s full. There’s plenty happening in OB and around the City – so, here’s the short list:
Saturday, Sept. 20th
Annual OB Pier Pancake Breakfast – 7:30 am – Noon
The annual OB Pier Pancake Breakfast will take place from 7:30am – 12:00pm. Proceeds of this community event benefit the OB Town Council holiday events and the annual OB Toy and Food Drive, which helps over 80 local families and seniors in need during the upcoming holiday season. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are available at Dog Beach Dog Wash, Raglan Public House, and South Coast Surf Shop!
This event and the Toy and Food Drive are not possible without the generous support of our community sponsors. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your support for Ocean Beach and market your business or organization to over a 1,000 local attendees. The cost to sponsor a table at the OB Pier Pancake Breakfast is $100. (See OBTC website for more info.)
Please note that seating is not reserved and is rolling for the entire 4.5 hours of the Pier Pancake Breakfast – in other words you can expect to have 30 – 60 different attendees sitting at your 8-seat table throughout the morning.
Coastal Clean-up – OB and another 100+ Sites – 9 to 12
Join the massive river, beach and creek clean-up for the entire San Diego County. Registration is open for volunteers to sign up to participate at one of 100 countywide cleanup sites. All volunteers must sign a waiver to participate, and minors under the age of eighteen require an additional parent or guardian signature on their form. Help reduce waste by bringing your own reusable water bottle, bucket to collect litter, and gardening or work gloves.

Paddle for Clean Water – 9 – 12am at OB Pier
The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter’s longest running and largest awareness event is back, calling all surfers, stand up paddle boarders, and ocean enthusiasts to paddle for clean water. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the organization’s Paddle for Clean Water event, which is happening on Sunday, September 21st from 9am to 12pm at the Ocean Beach Pier.
The non-competitive event will feature hundreds of surfers and ocean enthusiasts paddling around the Ocean Beach Pier in an effort to raise awareness about the need for clean water and healthy coastlines. Participants are encouraged to bring a surfboard, kayak, body board, or other human-powered craft to paddle around Southern California’s longest pier in a mass display of solidarity for the protection of our precious coastlines.
Chapter Chair, Roger Kube states,
“As one of the leading organizations in San Diego County protecting our coastline, we have multiple programs that address clean water and healthy coastlines. This year’s Paddle for Clean Water aims to raise awareness about current issues impacting our ocean and beaches and how we as a community can come together to find solutions.”
The morning’s festivities offer something for everyone, even if you are not participating in the paddle itself. There will be a donation-based yoga class starting at 8:30am, followed by a free breakfast for all paddlers at 9am, guest speakers including Chapter Chair Roger Kube, District 2 Councilmember Ed Harris, and professional surfer and world champion, environmentalist, and Surfrider Foundation board member Shaun Thomson. There will also be live music from San Diego based reggae band 2000 Tons of TNT, a raffle, and an after party at Wonderland Ocean Pub. The event will be emceed by radio personality Chris Cantore.
“This event is a favorite amongst our volunteers and supporters. Even if you don’t plan on paddling, we’ll have something for you. Come out and listen to some live music, hear from our guest speakers, and cheer on the paddlers from the pier,” says Chapter Manager, Haley Haggerstone.

People’s Climate March – 12:30 pm at City Hall
This coming Sunday is the People’s Climate March in New York City, here in San Diego, and elsewhere around the world. According to the organizers in San Diego, the march is happening to “call for solutions that work for people and the planet – a rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewables and energy efficiency, and a just and sustainable economy. We will press our elected leaders to implement a strong Climate Action Plan for San Diego; develop sustainable water policies; build affordable mass transit and facilitate healthy communities; and support green jobs and clean energy.”
Folks will gather at City Hall at 12:30 to call for a strong Climate Action Plan, stop at the American Plaza / Santa Fe Station to highlight transportation alternatives, and end at the County Administration Building Park, where marchers will hear from local leaders. Global Peace Meditation – 12 Noon
People all over the globe will be mediating simultaneously on Peace Day. On the west coast the time will be 12 noon (PST). Liquid Blue will host the San Diego “Unify” group mediation at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park across the street from the Hippie House. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.
Earthdance – 2pm at Winston’s
“Earthdance” begins at “Winston’s” in Ocean Beach. The musical acts are extraordinary; the speakers are motivating and there will be a prayer for peace. Earthdance is aligned with the UN International Day of Peace on September 21st, each year. That day is devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideas of peace and non-violence, both within and among all nations and people. With the turmoil facing all of us at this time in 2014, there cannot be a more appropriate celebration addressing this problem.
Every Earthdance event across the globe recites the Prayer for Peace. It is often done at the same moment. This Peace Prayer is a tradition at Earthdance dating back to the initial year of 1997. At Earthdance San Diego the Prayer For Peace will occur at 7pm. The Prayer for Peace is a profound moment that unifies our intentions for World Peace!
Admission is just $6. Earthdance San Diego is donating $100 to Earthdance International 501c3 as well as 50% of profits to San Diego Community Radio KNSJ 89.1. Help fight the corporate media takeover by supporting community radio in our city of San Diego.

Joyce, you’re in luck! I just checked, and Rancho Bernardo is planning to do just that this weekend! Also check the towns of Mt. Hope, Encanto, spring valley, and Rancho Penasquitos. All with nothing to do! Have (no) fun! ;)
A busy day on Sunday Sept 21st, but what better way to spend it than with people who care about other people and the planet. The Paddle for Clean Water event is always fun and informative. I believe the People’s Climate March will be big here in San Diego. There are many diverse organizations supporting it and people are starting to see the connections between peace, social justice and the environment.
