A 1000 signatures have been collected

A special meeting has been called for tonight, Monday, June 16th, as part of the campaign by OB planners to galvanize the community in support of the OB Community Plan.

All OB villagers are invited – and especially OBceans who are highly concerned about what is coming down from the San Diego Planning Commission in terms of recommending that the OB Plan be de-clawed.

The meeting is at 6 pm and will be held at Dog Beach Dog Wash, located at 4933 Voltaire Street.

It will be run by the Sub-committee of the OB Community Plan Update, a subgroup of the OB Planning Board.  The co-chairs of that group are Mindy Pellessier and Gio Ingolia.

The sub-committee has sponsored a Petition that is being circulated throughout OB – and everyone is urged to sign it, basically pledging support for the OB Community Plan. There’s a website and meetings with politicos going on, as the Petition is out at Farmers’ Markets and community businesses.

Organizers estimate that they and all the folks circulating the petition have a 1000 signatures.  More are needed – like another thousand.

Volunteers are needed to circulate the petition at the weekly Wed. markets and at the final push for signatures during the OB Street Fair near the end of the month.  OB residents are also urged to attend the June 30th City Council meeting, wear blue to signify support for the campaign.  Here’s the website to indicate that you’re attending the meeting on the 30th.

My take is that only OBcians over 50 care about this history and the OB Plan by extension. The young set in town are too busy living their lives and having fun at the beach. There’s the World Cup, there’s the craft beer exhibits, there’s always the surf of course, there’s the music scene, and all the fine restaurants in OB. There’s no sense of immediacy or urgency by the scores of younger people who live here around this issue right now.

Yet, the sad part is that it’s the young that will have to live with whatever OB ends up as, with its plan submerged by the politicos and the pressure from capital.

Sounds like you live in your own delusional world. I know several people under the age of 30 that have been collecting signatures for the petition. Many of us care, there are just far more young people on OB. There are just as many middle aged folks who are apathetic as well, they are just busy doing things like work and taking care of their families instead of being out in the open surfing, drinking, etc. you will get apathy across the board in most places you travel to – it’s not endemic to OB.

Tyler, really, on this, I’d really love to be proven wrong. Was maybe voicing fears than objective evidence.

OBJOe, that is very cynical. Have not you seen all the young new faces at town events and meetings like the town council? There’s a whole new generation of new OB leaders taking on responsibilities.
