One of my best friends has lost his five year battle with cancer this weekend. Started in his prostate, and spread, took his bladder, then spread to his lungs, and was finally attacking his spine. Tonight or tommorrow he’s going to the hospice and he’s going to meditate to a certain state… and just. stop. breathing. He’s got that kind of personal discipline, we used to call him “the last of the Iron Men” when I worked with him years ago. One sunday he broke his leg playing rugby at Robb Field, a compound fracture with the bone sticking out of his thigh…. he was at work the next day. I saw him yesterday for the first time in months, I was surprised how far he’d deteriorated and couldn’t offer a hollow, naive “get well” wish. We agreed the pursuit of happinesss for him now is death, so I hope it is with minimal pain, maximum dignity, and his loving woman by his side. In the state of California any assist with suicide is criminal, so I could only imply vaguely any advice I’d found which could help him at least define the time and place on his terms. (for future reference if you are on an opoid pain regimen, and have been ramping up the dose, it’s nearly impossible to easily overdose when the time comes)
In light of the points made above in this article…. I’d risk the heart disease instead. You go fast. Cancer is cruel.
