It isn’t often that I leave Ocean Beach to try a restaurant in Pacific Beach, but today was an exception. We ended up at Kono’s Surf Club in PB.

But before that, the four of us widows had a plan: to  “celebrate” the deaths of our husbands, and everyone was anxious to go to the cemetery – Ft. Rosecrans – to see if any progress has been made on its grounds since we all made the trek up there last month.

At the same time, Ro had discovered an estate sale being held in La Jolla, so we thought it would be fun to go there after the cemetery. And, said I, “if we are going to be in La Jolla, why not try someplace to eat in the area?” and all agreed.

We went to Ft. Rosecrans and Doug Ledbetter, the new Director, told me he would be home most of the day and to stop in so he could answer our questions. He was most gracious; spent 45 minutes answering questions; giving us some information we didn’t have before, and told me that I could expect a monthly update in the next few days or so that I could publish in the OBRag and San Diego Free Press.

From there we went to the estate sale and all of us were disappointed in the merchandise that was for sale. The view, however, was magnificent, and we stayed about an hour just looking out the windows.

I was afraid that since it was a Saturday they would be packed, but it turned out we had no trouble getting a table and placed our order with Martin – the most helpful order taker we had met in a long time. He answered our myriad of questions – what’s in the burrito?; how many different burrito’s are there? etc. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, but are right on the boardwalk, almost across from the Chrystal Pier. We were amazed at the low prices, and later were amazed of the wonderful food.

The Big Breakfast #2 (All photos by Judi Curry)

Irene had the “Big Breakfast #2 ($6.95) which consisted of eggs, bacon, English muffins, potatoes and French Toast. “Big” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Ro ordered the “Little Breakfast” ($5.95) with bacon. It consisted of 2 eggs, Kono potatoes and wheat toast. She commented that the eggs were served just the way she ordered them; she ordered crisp bacon, and everything was perfect.

The Egg Scrambler

Candy and I ordered the Egg Scramble ($6.95) which were scrambled eggs, bacon, onion, green pepper, cheese, English muffin and potatoes. Neither of us could find any fault with the meal. The four of us took our leftovers home, and there is enough left over for another meal.

The menu offers 16 breakfasts and 13 lunch items. Fries are $1.75 extra. The beverages were all pretty standard.

In addition to the inside restaurant, Kono’s has a “coffee cart” with a full array of coffees just to the north of the restaurant. The view is fantastic – on the beach –and there is outside eating on the deck. (We chose to eat indoors because there were only two tables with umbrella’s and both were taken.)

Without question the service, food, and ambiance was fantastic. The four of us will be back, either together or with others.

I have been vacationing in Mission Beach since the 90’s and I always go to Kono’s for breakfast. You cannot beat it for the price, quantity or quality of food. Martin also remembers me from each year. My favorite is the Breakfast Burrito #2. I highly recommend Kono’s to all my friends in Arizona who vacation in the Pacific Beach area.

KONO’s is THE Best value, and perhaps just the best in PB.
Breakfasts are huge, great quality ingredients, friendly staff—and then there is that view. The Pacific Ocean and all the boardwalk pedestrian traffic.

Lines in summer weekends, but after the ZONNIES leave it is better for the locals.

Try the Big Breakfast # 2.

Kono’s Surf Club is a gold mine and there’s a reason. The food is outstanding, the prices are very fair, and the ambiance indoors or outdoors is second to none. At breakfast during the summer seven days a week, the line may be very long depending on your time of arrival. During our “Winter” and Spring , with the exception of weekends, the lines are quite reasonable.. Every weekend, regardless of the season, the lines may be very long depending on your time of arrival.

The best way to arrive and depart Kono’s is on your bicycle. You can lock your bike virtually anywhere outside of Kon0’s and the exercise, especially after eating, will be great for you.

Most importantly, wear a helmet when riding. Every serious bicyclist wears a helmet. Those who care more about their hair and image and don’t wear a helmet I refer to as hard-headed. Yes, and they will always be hard-headed until their head hits the ground. Oh, and BTW, the ground is much harder than that of a hard- headed bicyclist. Yes, something’s got to give.

Simply said, Kono’s is the B-E-S-T.

I haven’t been there in ages and seeing the pics here I may have to head back this weekend. Only drawback is nothing for those hair of the dog mornings;)

Work on your spelling and that isn’t Martin. It is good though….best breaksfast sandwiches in the western hemisphere.

I beg your pardon? The man I have in the picture told me that was his name. And what spelling are you talking about. May I suggest, Mr. Kettle, that you take a look at how you spelled “breaksfast (sic).

Sorry, John. I asked him his name; he said Martin. That is all I can go on. Do you know what his name is?

Also try “the Mission” in Mission Beach for an outstanding breakfast and sandwiches…

You are right, Derek. Love the Mission. There used to be one owned by the same people in OB – sad day when it closed down.
