In the past several weeks, I have been asked my no fewer than 4 people if I have tried the “O.B. Fisher’s”. I had not, but when Riccardo, my student from Italy told me he had a great fish taco there I decided it was time to try it out. After all, it is only steps from my house, and I have been to the “Pt. Loma Beach Café” for smoothies, so I called my neighbor Jim and asked him to try it out with me. (The Pt. Loma Beach Café is open in the mornings and early afternoon; the “OB Fisher’s” opens at 4:00pm in the same location.)
The restaurant is very small. There are only three tables inside and a few tables outside. I already knew this from previous patronage, and was pleased when Jim and I were the only customers. (That quickly changed when two separate parties came in after us.)
Although not an extensive menu, they offer Clam Chowder ($3); or a House Salad ($4). Also on the menu are two kinds of Ceviche – Shrimp ($7) or Fish ($6); Coctel de Camaron ($7); Two Baja Fish Tacos ($7); a Shrimp Quesadilla ($7); Fish & Chips ($7); as well as a Chicken Sandwich; Carne Asada Tacos, Burger and Fries, Carne Asada Burrito, and Asada Fries.
As if this wasn’t enough, they also have a section of “Dinner Entrees” which are served with rice and vegetable salad. Included are Grilled Tilapia, Margarita Shrimp, Grilled Cod Fillet, Cajun Shrimp, Mahi Mahi, Sirloin Steak with Potatoes, BBQ Salmon Filet, and Shrimp Diablo. The prices start at $10 and end at $12.
It was very difficult for me to choose between the two Ceviche’s and the Coctel de Camaron. I finally asked Tanya, the delightful young lady behind the counter which one she preferred. She said the “fish Ceviche” and that was what I ordered. It was good – very good. Lots of fish; cilantro; tomatoes; onions, etc., and had the taste of limes, not lemons – a sign of a good cook. I think if their Ceviche and mine were in a contest, it would be hard to decide which one was better, but since I put more things in mine it might tip the scales. It came with hot chips that were not greasy; and a very spicy salsa. Yum.
I also ordered the fish tacos, and the pieces of fish in the corn tortilla was large and cooked well. The tortillas were fresh, and the sauce was tasty. The taco was so large that I took the second one home to have tomorrow.
Jim ordered the grilled Mahi-Mahi and the filet was also very large. The salad that came with it was pleasant to both the eye and the taste buds. The inclusion of jicama was a pleasant taste sensation. He also remarked at how nice and hot the accompanying rice was. Not spicy hot; but temperature hot.
I asked Tanya if she could tell me something about the owners of the restaurant. Turns out that “Willie” also works at the Point Loma Beach Café in the morning. He and her father are co-owners of the OB Fisher’s. Unlike another restaurant that opened in the same location last year, all of the food is cooked on the premises. It is hot, fresh, and very tasty.
Another thing to note about this restaurant is that you can call or text your order, and they will deliver it free of extra charge. They are open daily from 4-9:00pm and on Friday and Saturday are open until 10:00pm. Our total bill, including the tip, came to $27. Both Jim and I enjoyed our meal, and will be back again. And if you have a doggie – bring him/her too. There is a water dish just outside the door on the patio for all of you.

Love this new place. I’ve tried two of their fish platters, the Shrimp Diablo and the Tilapia. Willie’s preparations are SO flavorful and even the rice is so different and delish. The sauce on the Diablo was the perfect amount of spice for me. The way he seared the Tilapia had just the right amount of crunch on it and the garlic marinade was stellar.
And his salads are so good as you mentioned with the additions of jicima and other julienned vegetables. The salad was great to have as a side dish with each platter.
I haven’t tried anything else yet, but he has a returning customer here! Gave him a great review on Yelp which I guess he recognized me from and thanked me for it.
The perfection of the fish cannot be described. It is rare to have preparation of food of this quality in a restaurant this size – not sandwiches, wraps, or pizza, but a real meal, with a variety of sauces depending on the fish. A welcome addition to OB, and no snobbery to go with the quality.
Too bad they don’t have a restroom for customers… or that’s what they told me when I went in for coffee. It’s a mile walk from my house so I probably won’t be going there for coffee again, let alone spend money on food.
I don’t think that is correct Lyn. We watched two separate groups come in and someone from each group used the restroom. I do not know why you were told that, but I know there is a restroom.
Darn it Judi – now I’m so hungry I can’t sit down! Thanks for the good work.
Try it Tom. I know you will be back again and again.
Love this place! Very accomodating!
