The Ocean Beach Town Council has invited community members to share their thoughts about the annual Fourth of July “Marshmallow Wars” at it’s public meeting – to be held tonight, Wednesday, July 24th. The meeting begins at 7pm and will be held at the Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
There has been a terrific debate among OB residents ever since the “outta control” traditional event this year after the fireworks on the 4th. The Town Council will open up its meeting tonight; the OB Mainstreet Association has been discussing how to proceed, and we at the OB Rag have also been fostering the debate.
The Town Council says it is sponsoring this town hall type meeting out of its concern that this year’s event injured some bystanders and left behind 2,372 pounds of trash on our streets and beaches.
Hopefully, many residents, business owners and others will attend tonight’s meeting and give the council feedback. SD Police Department reps are scheduled to attend and listen to the community’s feedback.
Other items on the council’s agenda include statements from parents calling on the city to develop a new crosswalk outside the OB Elementary School. The grassroots effort, which began two years ago, was spurred by the family of a young OB resident with special needs.
The Board will also unveil the Ocean Beach Town Council’s revamped website, which launched this week with new features and unique photos of our community.

I have to say the concept is hilarious unfortunately, I witnessed it as being a bit out of hand on Newport. Those marshmallows hurt and I was told by bystanders that going home early is important as the marshmallows end up being rocks and bottles. I did not witness any rocks or bottles but believe if the town council wants to make a change then they should cordon off a portion of the beach or a parking lot and insist that the marshmallow fights reign on within those boundaries.
So how did it go last night? I saw about 5 news trucks outside the masonic temple on my way home. I imagine Frank is busy writing an article right now! wooo!
