An unidentified man survived driving his car off the cliffs at Sunset Cliffs early Monday morning, July 29. The vehicle landed 50 feet below in a cove at Osprey Street about 5:20 a.m. local media report. (The U-T said it was 40 feet.)
At first, witnesses said, the guy got out of his car and walked around and also into the ocean. He then sat down on the beach. First responders reached him by water and air. He was the only occupant of the vehicle – which still had its lights on after the fall and appeared to have rear end damage.
Two lifeguards swam to him as a rope was lowered for a paramedic. But it was reported that he was “too combative to fly at first” – can you imagine surviving the fall and then having people try to place you into a harness to take you back up into the air? – . U-T San Diego reports that “witnesses saw the driver get out of the car. Paramedic Josh Miramontez [stated] that he found the man lying down but the motorist screamed, yelled and fought with rescuers.
At any rate, he was stabilized and airlifted off the beach and over to UC San Diego Medical Center. He is not said to have any serious injuries. Police told the U-T that the driver is a suspected DUI.
One witness stated to the media that “the gate in the parking area near the incident had been snapped off and it was wide open.” 7San Diego
He was airlifted to a hospital but authorities say his injuries weren’t serious.
Police say the car apparently was moving fast when it smashed through a locked gate and went over the bluff.
