“Godspell” Musical Opens Friday at OB Playhouse
Today – Friday, June 14, the musical “Godspell” opens at the Ocean Beach Playhouse as the first in a full season of shows. Organizers call this a “classic Stephen Schwartz musical is unlike you have ever seen it before!” The Ocean Beach Playhouse is located at 4944 Newport Ave.
It blends 70s nostalgia with a contemporary “OB” feel, directors Kristen Fogle and George Bailey infuse puppets, ballet, acoustic guitar, and a few surprises into this beloved show, one not often done in San Diego. The show is produced by Lynne and Paul Bolton and choreographed by Kayla Schaffroth. The cast includes Michael Parrott, Brian Butler, Arielle Meads, Bailey La Flam, Jeffrey Crofton, Ed Cao, Gillian Merrill, Alex Pannullo, Keala Milles, Lydia Real, and Rickey Phatsenhann.
Show times: Thurs, June 20; Fridays, June 14, 21, and 28; Saturdays, June 15, 29, and July 5 at 7:30 p.m., Sundays, June 16, 23, 30, and July 7 at 2 pm.

100th Anniversary of OB’s Wonderland One of Themes of 2013 Street Fair – Saturday, June 22
The 34th Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-off Festival will offer attendees eclectic fun in the sun that’s great for all ages. Join more than 70,000 visitors throughout the day for tasty festival nosh, art, beachfront entertainment, shopping and more.
The chili competition will feature more than two dozen tastings from amateur entrants competing for the titles of Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award and grand prize People’s Choice Award. Attendees of all ages can take part in creating the annual Street Fair mural or playing outdoor laser tag.
Festival highlights include:
- Five outdoor stages plus one indoor stage of continuous live music
- Artists’ Alley – applications received after May 29, 2013 will be added to the waitlist.

There will also be free trolley service to the O.B. Street Fair from Robb Field and Sea World Driver from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM and running every half hour on the half hour.
OB Street Fair with Kids Fun Zone
The Wonderland II – Kids’ Fun Zone will be located in Ocean Beach Park, which is between Santa Monica and Saratoga Ave, just off of Abbott St in Ocean Beach. The Kids Fun Zone will begin at 10:00 AM and go until approximately 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013.
Some of the activities at the Wonderland II Kids’ Fun Zone are planned to include the new Mechanical Shark (like a mechanical bull — but it’s a Great White Shark!), Surfing Simulator, 27-Foot Cliff Hanger Slide, Dual Lane Giant Slide, challenging 70′ Obstacle Course, Bungee Run, Military Bounce House with Slide, Velcro Wall with Sticky Suits, Speed Pitch with Radar Speed Tracking, and for little toddlers, the Animal Kingdom Jungle Playland.
According to Greg Knight, owner and operator of San Diego Kids Party Rentals, his company will be pre-selling All-Day and 1-Hour access passes on-line at a 20% savings, priced at $20 and $12, respectively. Cliff Walls Graffiti Clean-up
Graffiti on cliff walls near the OB Pier were painted over by volunteers from a new local group, CSI Ocean Beach. About a half dozen volunteers showed up on Wed., June 12th to join the clean-up. The City’s Park and Rec donated supplies, like paint, brushes, rollers, pans, and grabbers and buckets for trash pickup.
The clean-up group is a sub-committee of the newly-reorganized OB Citizens Patrol, which meets the second Monday of every month at the Ocean Beach Women’s Club at 2160 Bacon Street. Here is a brief report by our friend Mercy Baron at the SD Reader.
Congressman Peters Speaks Against Increases in Student Loan Rates
“At UC San Diego or the University of San Diego or Point Loma Nazarene… students are relying on us to keep loan rates low,” said Rep. Scott Peters (D-San Diego). Peters called on leaders in Washington to take action to stop student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1. He supports H.R. 1595, the Student Loan Relief Act, by Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT) which would freeze Strafford student loan rates at 3.4 percent for two years.
Peters, who has UC San Diego, University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene in his district, said no student who has worked hard and qualified for college should be denied the opportunity to attend college because they cannot afford to pay for it up front.
“There are only 10 legislative days left for Congress to act to keep the dream of college in reach for millions of students. Higher education that is both high-quality and affordable is central to the success of middle class families and the American Dream,” he said in a statement. Patch.com.
Scripps Point Loma Pier to Be Replaced Just in Time for New Navy Research Ship, “Sally Ride”
State lawmakers Friday plan to set aside $5 million to help replace an aging Point Loma pier just in time for the highly anticipated arrival of a new Navy research vessel named in honor of the late astronaut Sally Ride.
The Nimitz Marine Facility, known as “MarFac,” is essential to the ongoing research carried out by the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, supporters say. See more from U-T.
