sunset cliffs-from-airControversy Over “Cave Rave” Continues

On Memorial Day, May 27, surfers, residents, and police found that a “Cave Rave” had been held  at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.  They also found broken glass, graffiti on the inside of the cave and other damage. But who was responsible?  The debate and the controversy continues. See also some of the comments to this article at SDReader: “An estimated 75 to 100 people gathered at the site. There was a portable generator, strobe lights, and music. Surfers didn’t mind the party so much as the broken beer bottles on the trails; also, the cans, bottles, and litter on the beach.”  SD Reader

Does OB Want the Brighton Beach Restrooms Open 24/7?

The city has given itself a time extension to make a decision, but some members of the OB Town Council are not pleased about it.   The restrooms, which opened amid much fanfare last July, had been open 24 hours a day until mid-April, when a private security company began locking it up from midnight to 6:30 a.m. A 30-day trial period ended May 15, but now the city says that time frame was too early in the year to get a realistic idea of how the shortened hours could impact the community. I live roughly at Bacon and Brighton. I’ve had FOUR incidents in which I have caught people urinating on my property on along the wall of my property in the alley in the last 2 months. Those are only the times in which I’ve actually caught them, I’m sure there has been more. Every single one of these cases has happened after midnight. I think that speaks volumes in terms of public restroom availability.

or it speaks of laziness since, as the story notes, the lifeguard tower bathrooms are open 24/7. There can’t be such a demand for bathrooms after midnight that can’t be accommodated by one bathroom that’s a short distance from Brighton.

^^^I’ll go with the laziness. I walk my dogs not far from the REUNION bar on Mendocino (which I imagine has restrooms). I see vomit, human feces and smell the stench of urine on a daily basis. I also pick up more trash strewn by people, than dog p**p.

Take photos of those doing their business on your property and give them to the police. Or get a survellience camera and turn the tape over to the authorities. Better yet post the photos on the rag so we can all know who these disrespectful people are!

Midnight – 2: am is public urination time in O.B., unfortunately most are residents walking home, not at the beach.
The Brighton St. bathroom is not on the way home to many folks.
I usually grab a garden hose and start “cleaning” while they are doing their business.
Yes, squirting someone with water is assault, call the police, take me away for cleaning.
Posting a photo is a great idea.
Maybe the bathrooms could open at 5:30am this time of year to accommodate those that surf or walk early morning ?

1. “Cave Rave” – Party on, Garth – just do it without trash and without leaving crap laying around. I don’t do as many of my one-man-one-daughter cleanups as I used to, but I know it gets bad. Not getting into who’s responsible/not – if you saw trash and didn’t grab it, you suck.

2. OBTC wants the bathrooms closed so overnight beach visitors near the most popular overnight beach spot (at least when I was in my teens and twenties)? I encourage anyone who can stay up late enough (the whole tri-job thing has made me old before my time) to drop a deuce on the doorstep during off-hours.

3. Apartment sales haven’t stalled, price expectations have become overblown. My landlord was buying into the downturn like crazy, and I was going to go shopping for a little 2-4 unit complex with at least one tolerably-sized 2 bed unit, but prices today are making this decade-plus RE vet extend his lease, hunker down, and wait for the next crash to buy in.

4. I’ve seen some good films advertised at Frequency…hope to get out there and see some of you.

5. Tyler/others – when I lived at Abbott/Lotus/W.Pt.Loma, the nights when there wasn’t someone pissing on my house were more rare than when there was…’nuff said about bathrooms, aside that we need even more than we have, not less. I’m gearing up for the craziness of summer, but also thankful to be living south of the war zone these days. I feel for my mother-in-law on Cape May…

Good idea about taking photos. I will definitely have my camera ready for the next incident.

Also – has there ever been discussion about the city putting a trash can or two (like the cement ones on Cable) on Bacon Street in the war zone? I think it could really help.

Tyler,
Unfortunately you may have to do it yourself.
The city refuses to put trash cans in most areas, the pier parking lot just got two after months and months of phone calls and emails to park & rec.
Our parking lot has trash every morning, the people that have to clean up also wonder where the trash cans are ?
Some idiot park & rec. director ( Dan Daneri ) has his head way up his ass.
We need at least two more trash cans in the parking lot. It should only take another year to make him understand.

Thanks for the reply. Frustrating that common sense seems to be absent at the Parks and Rec department.

Actually, to the contrary, the city is more interested in taking them down than putting them up – there used to be two near me, at Coronado and Bacon and at the end of Santa Cruz by the staircase down the cliffs, that got pulled out a few years ago.

Hey OB california stoppers! Beware of the intersection of W Point Loma and Bacon. There’s a very clever motorcycle cop that hides in the parking lot of the place across from Bo Beau. He also parks up W Point Loma on the wrong side or the road where it starts to bend left going towards Cable. You’ll never see him so come to a complete stop or you’ll be paying a grip.

I love it. I pass through there every morning after grabbing coffee and see all sorts of dangerous tomfoolery – just wish we could get the filth to start popping the people who intentionally get in the wrong lane for I-8 eastbound and dive into traffic at the last second.

” just wish we could get the filth to start popping the people who intentionally get in the wrong lane for I-8 eastbound and dive into traffic at the last second.”

Ditto on that but I’ve seen people actually do just that in front of a cop car without punishment.

Why is the bathroom closing at all? Why is this even an issue? Has there been crimes committed there?
Or is this just another example of “let’s deny the homeless the dignity of basic human needs in the hopes they will go elsewhere or disappear completely”?

Frank, has there been any follow-up on this cave rave ? Per the article, no citations were written. Why not ? Isn’t it illegal to be drinking on the beach ? Is it legal to set up a sound system and strobe lights in an environment like the Cliffs ? Doesn’t seem like it’s the most eco-friendly thing for the Cliffs and the wildlife there. It just seems to me that something should be done to make sure nothing like this happens again.
