Interview with Lifeguard Historian Who Notes OB Drownings of 13 on May 5, 1918
Here’s an interesting interview at Coronado Patch with Mike Martino – a lifeguard – who wrote the book “Lifeguards of San Diego County“. Martino cites the “key tragedy in San Diego that caused a major perception in understanding the need for lifeguards,” and that was the drownings of 13 people off Ocean Beach on May 5, 1918:
The surf was running somewhere in the 8-10 foot range, and a massive rip current swept beach goers off their feet and out into the swirling currents and surf. When it was all over, 60 plus people had been rescued and 13 people had drowned.

San Diego Bands Play for Benefit and Tribute to Creator of “Crawdaddy” at OB’s Winston’s on Sunday
An incredible plethora of soloists and bands from San Diego will play at OB’s Winstons on Sunday, May 12th, and pay tribute to Paul Williams, the creator, publisher, editor and sole writer of “Crawdaddy” – which was the first US mag dedicated to “intelligent writing about pop music.” Williams passed away on March 27 from complications from the early onset dementia he began suffering from after a 1995 bicycle accident. He was 64, and a resident of Encinitas. Proceeds will go to his widow and son.
Bands such as Garage Orchestra, Mojo Nixon, Jose Sinatra & Berkley Hart, Miff Laracy, Bart Mendoza’s True Stories, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Ric Kaestner, Jon Kanis & Listening to Rocks and Jive Bombers will perform during the six-hour benefit. Skateboard Park Designer Got His Start in OB and Point Loma
Kanten Russle grew up skating in Point Loma and Ocean Beach and was good enough to turn pro. During his 13-year career, he was best known for “going big” — flying through the air down staircases and across gaps in buildings, taking jumps nobody else would. Now, at age 39, he’s made another leap, into designing skateparks for a living. He’s part of the sport’s ongoing transformation from outlaw status to mainstream, more popular worldwide than ever. Mayor Filner’s Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Okaying Ban Medical Herb Dispensaries
The following is a statement from Mayor Bob Filner on the California Supreme Court ruling today that upheld the right of a municipality to ban medical marijuana dispensaries:
“Although this ruling does a disservice to those who need compassionate care through the use of medical marijuana,” said Mayor Bob Filner, “it does not hinder our aim to provide regulated access to medical marijuana.”
