Interview with Lifeguard Historian Who Notes OB Drownings of 13 on May 5, 1918

Here’s an interesting interview at Coronado Patch with Mike Martino – a lifeguard – who wrote the book “Lifeguards of San Diego County“. Martino cites the “key tragedy in San Diego that caused a major perception in understanding the need for lifeguards,” and that was the drownings of 13 people off Ocean Beach on May 5, 1918:

The surf was running somewhere in the 8-10 foot range, and a massive rip current swept beach goers off their feet and out into the swirling currents and surf. When it was all over, 60 plus people had been rescued and 13 people had drowned.

The interview is by  Serge Dedina, executive director of Wildcoast – and a lifeguard himself. :

He’s part of the sport’s ongoing transformation from outlaw status to mainstream, more popular worldwide than ever.  For more, go here.
