Shamoun, Bushe and Tom Gawronski returned to the Board
The results of the OB Planning Board election are finally in. These “unofficial results” of the balloting – held Tuesday, March 12 – included 5 open seats for the Board, as well as two propositions.
Both propositions – one for a “maintenance assessment district” and the other to move the police trailer in the Pier parking lot to a different location- went down to defeat. We have yet to be provided with the actual votes, so it is difficult at this stage to fully understand by how much or how far these propositions fared.
The propositions would have only been advisory decisions. The results will be certified at the April 3rd monthly meeting of the Board, which at that time, final vote numbers will be released. We’ve heard that there was “a really good turn out and voters from all of the Districts participating even though there weren’t candidates in all of them.” PLus, both of the propositions failed “convincingly”, but not by “landslides”.
Of the 7 districts with open seats, two had no candidates and those seats – in District 1 and District 3 – remain vacant. Each year, 7 of the 14 seats on the Board are open, one for each district.

And as stated, actual numbers of votes and all the candidates’ names have not been provided as yet.
The Board, after it certifies the election results, will then turn to election of new officers. Often, it has been the practice of the Board, to make appointments of interested candidates to the vacant seats.

I do not live in OB , but does the Ca. Coastal Commission weigh in on this matter ….Does it really matter what some random board says …It is a matter of policy , practice and law right ?

The California Coastal Commission is NOT some random board; it’s the panel set up by the Voters of California to guard the coast – our coast – your coast. And I’m glad they’re there for us. In this case, I believe they had already approved the project.
I was referring to this vote NOT to move the trailer by some group of people whos vote really does not mean anything …correct me if i am mistaken . I am FULLY aware of what the California Coastal Commission is and does. But thanks for the clarification for those who do not.
You believe they have approved the project based on what factual information if I may ask ? Are you privy to something nobody else knows …Do you have the scoop?

I agree the Coastal Commission is a good guardian of the shoreline, if it was not for them this trailer would be in the parking lot for ever.
The Coastal Commission is the agency forcing the city to move the trailer or obtain a C.D.P.
The Coastal Commission has not approved the C.D.P. because a C.D.P. has not been issued…….. ever !
Lets be clear this is NOT a police trailer, it is a rental from Bert’s trailers, paid for by a PRIVATE organization, the OBMA.
Last word from the planning department was the applicant , Ms Stone ( the person applying for the permit, not S.D.P.D. or the City of San Diego ) is waiting for a date to meet with a hearing officer from the planning department to present her project and explain why she is trying to place an office trailer that does not meet building standards as a permanent structure in the middle of a beach parking lot.
The Coastal Commission will listen to an appeal if the city’s planning department is stupid enough to issue a C.D.P. . The coastal commission has a big problem with ANYONE converting public beach parking for private use & blocking the view of the ocean from Newport Ave. S.D.P.D. would not get away with it either, it’s illegal.
A private organization was allowed to take over our beach parking lot to influence local police, it worked for a while.
The director of park & rec. that allowed this to happen in our parking lot should be fired for ignorance & stupidity, the trailer has never had the legal right to be in the parking lot.

OBRACER…thank you for shedding light on the police trailer. I realize now the information I have been hearing about the police trailer was intentionally convoluted–once again what should be a non-profit organization is operating as a business (OBMA). OBMA has been trying hard to refuse any cost to get the city’s planning dept to issue a CDP for the police trailer but now I realize there is much more than meets the eye….I have lived in OB for more than 5 years but was ignorant to the details of the history/back-story of this police trailer. I am sick and tired of hearing how OBMA operates as a BUSINESS and gets OB Planning Board to do their dirty work. I wish you had wrote an article for OBRag BEFORE the election. I would love to see you still write something to further explain the Coastal Commission’s side versus the OBMA/SDPD side of the police trailer issue so we can all understand the importance of how the trailer is dealt with. This topic IS DESERVING of more discussion!
I tried in the year 2000 to get people to get together to have the trailer
removed as I knew it is /was illegal to be there. I have up as
no one wanted to get involved. So now, after all these years
it still is allowed to be there.
Also, encroachment of city property at the end of Del Mar by the owner
of the property next to the small park . Same park that they had the concrete
benches removed since they did not want the public there.
Why are they allowed to keep city property
for their own?
Other areas too that are “allowed ” to just do what they want.

Where can I find any prior discussion of an OB MAD?
Where would the boundaries be?
Who would be assessed?
Some of the people behind a PB MAD live in OB and have businesses in Little Italy. Do people proposing an OB MAD live and work in PB?
