Last Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives followed the Senate in re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act with bi-partisan support. The timing was particularly appropriate: Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day. The overall theme this year is “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum,” while the United Nations theme for the day is “A promise is a promise: Time to end violence against women.”
San Diego State
On Friday, March 8th, San Diego State University’s Women’s Studies department Femininist Research Colloquia series will host Kum Kum Bhavani, an author and Sociology Professor from UC Santa Barabara, whose research interests lie within development, feminist and cultural studies.
The presentation is part of a monthly series to providing a platform for discussion of ongoing research in women’s studies. This year’s theme is Gender, Conflict and the Environment: Visionary Transnational Communities.
The lecture will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., March 8, in Arts and Letters room 201. The event is free and open to the public. It is suggested that you arrive early, as seating may be limited. Unity San Diego
On Saturday, March 9, Unity San Diego, located at 3770 Altadena Ave. will host an afternoon and evening of musical activities, as well as workshops and a potluck dinner. Singer-songwriter Judy Fjell and author Carolle Jean-Murat will host the festivities. Musicians Lisa Sanders, Peggy Watson and The Trouble Clefs will also perform. On Sunday, March 10th Women’s Empowerment International will present an event to celebrate International Women’s Day and the achievements of first-generation women entrepreneurs in San Diego. The free event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave, San Diego.
Attendees will meet recipients of microfinance loans and business consulting services provided by WE, the International Rescue Committee, Accion San Diego, ErasePoverty and PCI Global. University of San Diego
On Wednesday, March 13th, at 7:30am,the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) will host Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Laureate, Liberian peace activist, trained social worker and women’s rights advocate at the 9th annual International Women’s Day Breakfast .
The IPJ will also share a report from the 57th U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, where the focus was on the global pandemic of violence against women. Proceeds from the breakfast will support the Women PeaceMakers Program, which documents the stories and best practices of international women leaders who are involved in human rights and peacemaking efforts in their home countries.
