Ross’ scalp wound from the assault.

In a graphic reminder that not all assaults that occur in Ocean Beach are directed at women, we have a report that two men were assaulted and injured on Newport Avenue Saturday night, November 10th, in what appears to be a racially motivated attack.

A young OBcean named Ross was speaking to a Mexican friend in Hodad’s parking lot around 11:30 pm Saturday night. Ross was speaking in Spanish and had his back up against the brick wall.  As they were talking, a man walked by and as he passed, he made a disparaging remark, something along the lines of ‘we don’t need Mexicans in OB’.  Ross is Anglo.

Moments later the same guy comes around the corner, and with the back of his elbow smashed Ross’ head into the brick wall.  Ross immediately falls as he was knocked out.

Two witnesses called 911.  Ross’ friend attempted to stop the assailant from leaving until police arrived, but the attacker actually chased the friend from Bacon Street over to the front of the Black – where he began to pummel the friend. The assailant punched, choked, and attempted to gouge his eyes.

A bouncer arrived and pulled the guy off.  But he took off, and was last seen heading south on Bacon.

The assailant is described as 6 feet 1 inch, having a short military-type haircut, wearing a plaid shirt with jeans.

The police did arrive about 12 minutes after the assault. Ross and his friend gave reports, but Ross had to go to the emergency room – where he needed 7 staples to close his scalp wound.

There may have been witnesses, as it was reported to Ross that a small group of skaters with a videocamera may also have been involved, as they were egging the assailant on as he attacked Ross’ friend in front of the Black.

There are surveillance cameras in the immediate vicinity – such as outside the Black Bead.  Hopefully, these cameras may yield the identities of the attacker.

Anyone with information on these assaults may contact the OB Rag, at our confidential email: obragblog@gmail.com

This is not the first time a local bouncer has intervened in an assault on the streets of Ocean Beach lately, as a bouncer helped to rescue a victim injured outside a bar around the time of the Oktoberfest.

This is horrendous! I hope the assailant – and those skaters with the camera equipment – are all brought in. In the case of the skaters, stoking the fire, in my book, should necessitate some type of consequences – and not just a stern talking to by local authorities. Would this constitute aiding and abetting? Is there a law that addresses this behavior and provides consequences for it?

Thank you to the bouncer. . .and I’m glad to hear the only cameras weren’t carried by the skaters!

So now it is not safe to speak Spanish in OB? ¡Híjole! What’s this town turning into?

Ross, get well soon, and keep speaking whatever language you please.
