The SDPD’s Western Division is conducting an audit of the some 137 known sex offenders in the area. And it began Thursday, Oct. 18th.  (The “area” is assumed to be the City of San Diego that is in the Western Division.)

We learned of the audit while conducting some follow-up of our own on some OB crime activity, including the recent stabbings, as well as the status of DNA evidence which is believed to have been collected from the Saratoga Avenue peeping tom.

Police say this on-going operation is not in response to any perceived increase in recent sex crimes, but rather it is an effort by the SDPD Western Division to determine the status of the area’s sexual offenders. The police summary report reflects the efforts of eleven different agencies.

According to the SDPD’s own website:

The Western Division serves the neighborhoods of Hillcrest, La Playa, Linda Vista, Loma Portal, Midtown, Midway District, Mission Hills, Mission Valley West, Morena, Ocean Beach, Old Town, Point Loma Heights, Roseville-Fleetridge, Sunset Cliffs, University Heights and Wooded Area.

Western Division serves a population of 129,709 people and encompasses 22.7 square miles

The following information describes the initial results of an audit which began on the morning of Oct. 18th and police say it will be completed after status has been verified for all registered offenders in the area.

Some noteworthy highlights include one GPS target who was arrested for possession of alcohol and four targets were found to be “out of compliance” but require further investigation.

Of the 79 found in compliance, three are currently in custody for unspecified reasons, and two are deceased due to natural causes.

Excerpt from email by Lt. Natalie Stone

On October 18, 2012, a Division wide audit of registered sex offenders was conducted in Western Division. A prior list of 133 non transient and 4 parole GPS registered sex offender targets were identified for audits.

Personnel for the operation came from Western Division Street Crimes Unit, Western Division Neighborhood Resource Team, SDPD 290 Unit, San Diego County SAFE Task Force, US Marshals, US Probation, County Probation, State Parole, Grossmont Community College Police, San Diego Sherriff’s Reserve Unit and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

The results of the audit are as follows:

– 79 in compliance (3 currently in custody)

– 4 pending out of compliance with further investigation

– 37 go backs (not home) (These will be checked again at a later date to verify compliance)

– 2 deceased (natural causes)

– 11 not completed due to a loss of personnel for one audit team.

– 2 GPS targets in compliance

– 1 GPS target arrested for violation of conditions (possession of alcohol)

– 1 GPS target not contacted

Western Division Street Crimes Unit and Neighborhood Resource Team will handle the “Go-backs” and “Not completed.” All out of compliance will be evaluated and investigated by SAFE T.F. and/or SDPD 290 Unit.
