OB’s Roberto’s Gets ‘Honorable’ Mention in Poll on Fast-Food Mexican

The daily fishwrap conducted a poll very recently of  foodies’ choices of Mexican fast-food establishments.  And our Robertos’s on Voltaire received an ‘honorable’ mention by Charles Kaufman, baker, owner of Bread & Cie Café, and here it is:

The Roberto’s in Ocean Beach (4770 Voltaire St. 619-523-1162). I go off on their fish taco. If you’re in an “I don’t want to eat healthy” mood that’s the place you want to drive-thru. I love it. I suspect even the paper taco wrapper and napkins are deep fried. Sometimes I order the really cheap OB burrito for two reasons: 1) belly-busting tons o’ beans and 2) I just love to say “OB Burrito.”

Here is the remainder of the poll.

What do you think? Does Roberto’s in OB deserve the mention?

OB Rag Facebook fan & Grateful Dead University graduate Micky Lee posted this comment on FB that was just too good not to share:

Ob Rag had a story about Roberto’s in OB getting an honorable mention, so I wrote a review on Roberto’s myself. I should start a food critic page. Here’s my 1st restaurant review ever.

“That place if freakin disgusting. I ate there many times when I first moved to OB, and regretted it every time, then it was down to once or twice a year, and it was still disgusting every time. I’ve probably eaten there over 50 times in my life, and never had a burrito that wasn’t disgusting. One time a dude I was with had a rat run over his foot while he was eating his disgusting burrito, he was wearing flip flops too. lol”

Doug, don’t forget you did a review of “two ovens” – go to our summary of Peninsula restaurant reviews for a link to that piece. (On current homepage or just dropped off – in sidebar under ‘faves’. )

Wow he thought it was disgusting and ate there 50 times? Hmmm. I guess I’ll do something different tonight and go somewhere I think sucks. Tired of going places I like.

From 8-11, Monday thru Friday, the “Breakfast Burrito” (either ham or bacon) is ONLY $2.75 ($3.00/with tax) & it will keep you feeling full all day long.

Frank, didn’t you write a review on Roberto’s suckage back in the day?

OB really has no edible Mexi, and this makes me sad. The closest decent food is Tommy’s…

No, no, ooh no. What about Ortega’s? Yes, we did write up a “Where’s the beef, Roberto’s?” post early on, after we had purchased rolled tacos and discovered a little known item on the menu: rolled tacos without el carne – .

I haven’t really tried Ortega’s for take-out, though I’ll have to give it a shot…I always thought they were more of a dine-in kinda place, and I guess I was narrow-mindedly thinking taco shop with my comment.

Robert0s – where I scored crappy carne burritos when I was a teenager that without fail were puked up up a couple 40s later…

At Roberto’s, the trick is to go when no one is there and you can stand at the drive thru window and supervise the construction of your whatever (taco, burrito). It’s pretty hard to bitch when you are calling the shots. Hell, tortillas, choriso, eggs and queso. What could they/you screw up. Sucker Please. Pink slime and all that other crap.they serve at the chains.

Carne Asada Burrito with Cheese and Guacamole. No salsa. Just meat, cheese and guac. Delicious. A little more expensive than that place under the tattoo place across from the pier but a lot better tasting.
The guys that work there are very fast and professional too. YMMV.
