The new Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market opened Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from 3 – 7pm with 75 booths exhibiting the wares of 45 vendors to the delight of a crowd estimated by Brian Beevers, Market Manager, to be approximately 3,000 people! Among those attending were Lori Zapf, Republican, Member of San Diego City Council representing the Sixth District.

Vendors included local merchants of coffee, fruits, vegetables, baskets, nuts, berries, prepared foods, including BBQ, fresh drinks, flowers, clothing, fish, roasted corn, cupcakes, pasta, jams, object d’art, honey, plants, olives and bread. Two musicians played guitar and a percussion instrument.

At their jewelry booth, vendors Franki and Fella with their children, Tevita and London with nephew, Derrick, sold all handmade jewelry, including, cameos, owls and flowers, made by Fella from vintage jewelry pieces. While Fella sells his jewelry through a store in Ocean Beach, Franki said that they enjoyed selling his creations personally at the market so “we can talk to people face to face.”

Vendor David Klussman, the owner of Pizza Wagon, worked with his fiancé, Sharlene serving pizza from an oven that he bought on Craig’s List. David had intended to study to be a nurse until Brian offered him the opportunity to sell his pizza at Brian’s farmers’ markets. Currently, David is considering going back to school and looking forward to marrying Sharlene Saturday, June 23.

A son of farmers, Beevers left the website development field four years ago to eventually become the market manager of six area farmers’ markets. Beevers is looking for additional vendors, such as vendors of cheese, dipping sauces, more specialty produce and possibly meat, who can add further diversity to the Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market.

Catch the Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market every Tuesday from 3pm – 7pm on Morena Blvd. between Toys R Us and Petco.
