Here are links and stories from across the country – and at times, from across the seas – national news that you can naturally use.

Did Republicans deliberately crash the US economy?  So why does the US economy stink?  Why has job creation in America slowed to a crawl? Why, after several months of economic hope, are things suddenly turning sour? The culprits might seem obvious – uncertainty in Europe, an uneven economic recovery, fiscal and monetary policymakers immobilized and incapable of acting. But increasingly, Democrats are making the argument that the real culprit for the country’s economic woes lies in a more discrete location: with the Republican Party.

Woodward and Bernstein: 40 years after Watergate, Nixon was far worse than we thought.  This is written by Woodward and Bernstein themselves – more than a retrospective.

Justice Department To Sue Florida Over ‘Non-citizen’ Voter Purge –  The U.S. Justice Department is suing the state of Florida to force it to stop purging its voter rolls of what it alleges are up to 180,000 non-citizen voters.

After Wisconsin, a Movement to Get Money Out of Politics Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker kept his job, but with a high price tag. In a state of only six million people, $60 million was poured into the race, $50 million of which went to Governor Walker. And almost half of that was spent by outside groups — most of them not based in the state of Wisconsin.

The 10 Worst GOP Governors: What Horrors Did They Unleash in 2012? – Republican governors are still imposing slash-and-burn austerity policies on their populations, but the mainstream media isn’t paying much attention. Across the country, Republican governors, many of them elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010, have undermined women’s health, crushed workers’ right to negotiate collectively, made it tougher to vote and imposed ideologically informed slash-and-burn policies on their populations, often with little attention from the mainstream media.

“Did the Republicans crash the economy/are they stifling job growth?”

That’s pretty ridiculous when you consider it really requires moving into conspiracy theory territory to conceptualize. One must also make a distinction between a political party portraying a situation in the worst light, and them actually creating that situation or even having the ability to do so.
In the 2004 election Kerry’s campaign made an issue of the state of the war in Iraq, portraying it in the worst light. That didn’t mean it really was going that bad and it would be silly to say he had anything to do with what was going on there.
In Obama’s defense a lot of unrealistic goals are being expected with this word “recovery”. America’s fortunes are on a permanent downslide due to globalization, and the old ways of job creation (invent and patent a product, wall street provides capital for mfg start, get it to market) simply are no longer viable. Patents are worthless and the Chinese will make it at a fraction of the cost tomorrow and you can order it online the day after that.
Neither Obama nor the GOP caused or could reverse this, it’s politics as usual though to point fingers rather than move ahead. For that I concede the GOP is “guilty as charged”, best to just ignore them. That’s what I plan to do and will vote for Obama because Romney can’t “fix” the economy and I’m more concerned about the fundie agenda his supporters would advance.
