This is like the pot calling the kettle black. Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio’s mean streak publicly surfaced this week, giving potential voters a not-so-nice glimpse into his character.
First, a letter posted at Voice of San Diego from Navajo community activist Dale Peterson, detailed his being dumped from DeMaio’s website as a supporter (he gave money to and endorsed the candidate) for the heinous crime of supporting Mat Kostrinky, a Democrat, for City Council in District 7. Please read the letter along with the comment from a likely DeMaio sock puppet who uses the occasion to launch an attack on Nathan Fletcher.
I know we all are probably sick of the negative TV ads being aired locally. Many of these ads come from the Carl DeMaio campaign or their sock puppet Super PAC’s. While DeMaio isn’t the only candidate running negative ads, he is the only candidate thin-skinned enough to threaten to sue stations that run a negative ad regarding his vote on benefits for widows of slain police officers.

Good GOD this guy is such a freaking disaster. I swear, if DeMaio wins in November, I’m moving away from San Diego. I have no desire to live in a city that’s stupid enough to elect that sycophant. I can live with Nathan Fletcher or Bonnie Dumanis (not my preferred candidates, though). But DeMaio……..he will destroy this city from the inside out.

If he actually wins, it will be a good time to be an investigative reporter in this town. Certainly the Union-Trib won’t look at him with a critical eye, their owners will be too busy reaping the benefits of revolving door licensing process. If he wins, we need to establish a betting pool to pick how many days into his administration will pass before he is indicted. One need only to look at his campaign contributors list for a few moments before it becomes clear that a DeMaio administration will be short on enforcement and long on favors. (wink, wink)
What does it say about a city that would elect this leech as its mayor?
I have no super strong feelings about any of the other three candidates in the race. Like I said, I can live relatively easily with a Mayor Fletcher or Mayor Dumanis. I’ll be voting for Filner, but there are a number of things which I vehemently disagree with him on, such as his stance on the Chargers (“they make hundreds of millions of dollars.” They don’t, but whatever), and his assertion that the Convention Center doesn’t need to be expanded at all. I think it desperately does. The way DeMaio and Co. are going about it is completely asinine and destructive to the city, but I still think it needs to be done.
But just the thought of a Mayor DeMaio makes me really, really sad for San Diego. But tragically I think the voters of this city really are that gullible. I hope they prove me wrong.

FYI. Congressman Bob Filner is for expanding the Convention Center, just not the new financing plan and legal agreement that comes from private Hoteliers increasing the Hotel Tax in San Diego up to 3 percent.
Bob Filner wants the Hotel Tax to be voted upon by the citizens, as required by law. Proposition 26 in 2010 requires a public vote for the Special Tax on Hotels.

Part of the Hoteliers agreement with the City to increase the Hotel Tax without a public vote, includes moving the expensive and profitable small conventions out of our public Convention Center to their offsite private hotels. In general, the private hoteliers pay workers only the California minimum wage of $8 per hour, instead of the City of San Diego Living Wage of $13.77 per hour with no Health Insurance, or $11.47 per hour if the job comes with Health Insurance.

He told Annie and I in the interview we did with him explicitly that he did not believe that the Convention Center needed to be expanded. When we asked him about the fact that San Diego is losing out on the biggest and most lucrative national conventions, he replied that we should then focus on getting two or three more to compensate. He did say that he supported the idea of using a Chargers stadium at the bus yard site as a sort of extension of the Convention Center, which I wholeheartedly agree with–especially with the new bridge connecting the properties across Harbor Dr.
I can’t recall if we included it in the story we wrote from the interview, but we did ask……in fact, there were a number of questions we asked that didn’t make it into the story simply because there was so much to get into, and we didn’t want to bore our readers to death with a novella.
I also heard Bob at one point state that he did not know if the Convention Center needed an expansion.
At Wednesday SDAR mayoral forum Bob stated that all candidates agree that the Conention Center should be expanded.
Filner is alone in wanting a public vote for Hotel Taxes so we all can share in the wealth.
Finally the public is seeing what some of us have known for years. Carl is a whining, big mouthed hypocrite and LIAR!
Thos e sock puppets are Jim Jones, a self professed Chemist (empoyed by who? Dunno) and a Mark Giffin, who by no suprise is a contractor that stands to reap the benefits of Carl’s Super City Giveaway.
Know your enemy and keep him close.
Apparently the intimidation tactics are par for the course, as demonstrated by his publisher/convicted felon partner’s (as revealed by LGBT Weekly — see threats against DeMaio’s critics. If this city is crazy enough to elect DeMaio, not only will every service be sold to the highest campaign contributors, but every service will go into the tank.
While I’m supporting Filner, I could live with anyone but DeMaio.
He actually sent a cease and desist letter saying one ad was libelous. Uh. Check w/an attorney. It’s not libelous or slanderous if it’s the truth. He voted to deny benefits to widows and orphans of fallen officers.
