Saturday Fight Leaves One Stabbed and One Jailed
San Diego 6 reported that a fight between four people Saturday, April 14th, in and around Bacon Street and Newport Avenue ended with one man jailed on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and another hospitalized with a stab wound to his neck, San Diego police said. The fight broke out about 1 p.m. Saturday according to San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick.
It was reported that during the brawl, 18-year-old Gibran Perez allegedly stabbed a 20-year-old man in the neck with a sharp metal object, Battrick said.The victim pointed out his alleged assailant to the police, who was then arrested, Battrick said.The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Battrick said.
Skateboard Legend Tony Hawk Drops Load in Ocean Beach
The U-T reports: San Diego skateboarder and pop culture phenom Tony Hawk played one of the world’s biggest games of hide and seek Sunday, hiding packages in 45 states, seven other countries and, of course, across the county, then dropping clues about their whereabouts on Twitter. One was in Ocean Beach, and was snatched up around 9 a.m. by San Diego surfer/artist Chris Spencer. It was a box of skateboarding gear that included a cap, a helmet and shoes, so much stuff that Spencer wrote he would give some away to local kids.
New Panga Cruise Line Blocked from Dropping Visitors Off at OB Bars and Restaurants
Law enforcement blocked a new cruise line business from landing visitors on Ocean Beach shores. Panga Cruise attempted to drop off several dozen visitors early Monday (late Sunday night). Once the boat landed at OB, the crowd surged and made their way into OB’s downtown. One witness stated: “There was like a bunch of them… [they] walked straight up toward the bars and stuff like nothing was wrong.” Some of the cruise line visitors may work in those businesses. The OBHS will sponsor the San Diego River Park Foundation – A Tour of the Historic San Diego River by Richrd Dhu, on Thurs., April 19th – 7pm, at the P.L. United Methodist Church, , 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., O.B.
Richard Dhu, Program Manager at the San Diego River Park Foundation is a 20 year O.B. resident and homeowner (Brighton and Abbott) and San Diego Native. The San Diego River Park Foundation is dedicated to the restoration of the San Diego River, which completes its 52-mile journey to the Pacific at Dog Beach in O.B.; and creation of the San Diego River Park System and river trail from Julian to O.B. The San Diego River Park Foundation promotes community involvement and stewardship of the river and watershed. Our specific projects in O.B. are management of the Native Plant Garden/Reserve at Collier Park and the coastal dune and wetland habitat at Dog Beach.
Survey at Farmers Market Shows Visitors Patronize Local Establishments
A recent survey by the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association revealed that nearly 60 percent of the markets’ visitors do not live in Ocean Beach. The survey also showed that about 95 percent of those surveyed also patronize a local bar or restaurant during their trip to the farmers market.
Newport Quik-Stop Applies for More Booze at OB Planning Board Review Committee Hearing – April 18th
The Newport Quick-Stop at 4921 Newport wants its alcohol license upgraded. It’s application of existing Type 20 alcohol license (beer and wine only) is to a full Type 21 alcohol license (full liquor sales). Their application will be discussed at the OB Planning Board Review Committee hearing, Wednesday, April 18th, at 6:30 pm, at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Avenue. This is the only thing on the Committee’s agenda. If the Committee votes for a recommendation, it will be presented at the regular full Board meeting on Wednesday, May 2nd.
